Term limits for Community Moderators
I think three to five years of moderating is more than enough. Tap a new moderator at least once a year, have the experienced mods train them, then bow out. ExMods could be placed back in easily if the need arose.

Re: Term limits for Community Moderators
Probably, but you would think when a mod burned out they would have the wherewithal to just resign. I love the training aspect, tho it's not a hard thing to learn. What scares me is if you start losing mods then you get the asshole spammers who take over then eplaya is lost. Seen it before. And since we don't have anyone who is gonna come in and ban these worthless fraqs, we're essentially stuck moderating.
What we need are people who have been mods for a while to become admins, but that takes an applied level of trust. I'm not sure those with the power are either willing to trust someone they've worked with for only 3-5 years, or to give up that power. You don't need some masters in phpBB to admin a board - goddess knows, I've adminned a few in my years - you need a lot of common sense and applied trust and the ability NOT to stick your screwdriver in the back of the radio to see what happens and a knowledge of how the controls work.
Also there is some institutional knowledge. I can scan threads in a second and see if they're spam and move on.
Thing is - we HAVE mods who I haven't seen in a year. For a while I was like that, due to work issues. But retiring them, then expecting them to be there when you need them? Not gonna work. And what happens when one is gone, flips out, then comes back to have a field day on us?
Mandatory retirement? I like the "you gotta be adult enough to know when to retire and, by god, retire". If they're not doing the job, fire them.

AntiM.......you're the greatest!!!
And, I totally understand wanting off the train. Dawg knows, you've had plenty to deal with, and dealt with it well.
I support you, in whatever decision is made, and, thank you, for all you've done.
Who, are the "other mods" not heard from?

Mods with time in the trenches are extremely important to keep a community healthy. It's important to know the difference between who has an ax to grind for no other reason than some sort of power trip and those with genuine concerns.
Suck it.

Wow, I'm stunned.
In the time I've been here you've been a great moderator. Moderating any board is an under appreciated task at best, and I fully understand needing a break from that.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

This doesn't surprise me, but you will be missed. You had a certain knack.
Though this certainly doesn't mean you won't be posting here anymore, does it???

Re: Term limits for Community Moderators
Maybe there should be a "pool" of moderators large enough that there can always be an active "minimum" number of moderators working at all times. This could be done by rotation, like three months on and three months off, or whatever schedule works. The variations of scheduling are almost limitless. It might help to keep competent, dedicated people around longer without getting burned out.

That's what I'm trying to be until AG gets a new mod in place, I've asked someone and they are interested. This could take some time, and this close to the event, the timing is the worst possible.

AntiM has been the voice of reason, even when the unreasonable held sway.
even. tempered like fine chocolate. fair. consistent. i dont think you could ask for more in a moderator, and i am going to hold my IRE over this in deference to her, and her manner of dealing with the 1% out there who just don't get it, ever.
all of my self control is currently in use.
can't you tell?

We went from the wild wild West to the Spectabillis mod era, then back to chaos, then we got AntiM and have enjoyed 5 years of relative peace and quiet. And then here comes this bombshell...not that I don't understand why...I do. But damn this sucks and there's no other way to say it.
AntiM, please accept a sincere thank you for your service and awesome support of Burning Man's red headed electronic stepchild!
You have left one hell of a set of shoes to fill as far as mods go. I feel sorry for whomever tries to step into them...the bar is set high. Very high.

Re: Term limits for Community Moderators
Well, in the couple years I've been here Anti M you've been a great mod. You've put your foot down when need be, but also thrown out some nice snark as well, when appropriate of course
(2nd page right?)
As others have mentioned, you've had a lot going on in your personal life recently, and maybe a change of pace will be good for your soul.
So, does this mean we can start messing with you now?

Well, damn. Just damn.
You have been an incredibly fair mod. It will be fun to have your tongue able to operate at full tilt on the board, but I hope the next mod has the same head on their shoulders as you do. Well, not technically the same head...
As for "term limits"- I'm opposed to them pretty much in all cases. A mod should serve as long as they feel able and are doing a good job.

I kinda think it sucks, Anti M, sine you've done such an awesome job here for so long. Your guidance will be sorely missed. But as long as you aren't going anywhere, I can certainly understand wanting a change. You have my full support for whatever you wish to do!

Part of the reason I stay cloaked is so no one knows (a) I'm on line, and (b) I have the same funky green name icon as well. (tho no "moderator" subtitle... ttG!!)
