First Timer From Florida!!!

Post by inlighten » Mon Jul 18, 2011 2:17 pm

Hi ALL,
My name is Lance . This Will be my first burning man and like a few others on the forum I am going it alone. Have done lots of reading on the site about what to expect and what to bring. Guessing the next step would be to find a camp to join :D . I am starting the process a little late I know but better late then Never! Excited to meet lots of new people and make experiences that will last a life time!

Also thinking about flying in to San Fran so would love to make friends with some of you locals there! Message me !

Hey Lance, Welcome to eplaya!

There are lots of folks that camp alone. Or camp with 1 other person. Camping alone forces you to go out into the city and meet new folks.
Godda remember that flying in means you have to pay a lot for baggage, and buy stuff when you get there. There are a ton of burners from Florida this year. Could always meet up with some of them.

Hi Lance,

Glad to hear you've been doing a lot of reading . . .

Joining a camp is not a must. You're going to meet people everywhere, and will have neighbors (always introduce yourself!) and can visit theme camps all day long if you want to. There are lots of pluses about groups, but some of the nice things about going solo are that you don't have to pay dues, or labor however much a theme camp might want you to, and there's no drama unless you like to argue with yourself (I don't judge). :P

However, if you crave the theme camp experience, I believe there are still some camps accepting new members in the 2011 Theme Camps forum a couple of blips below this one. There's a post at the top with some helpful tips about what to do, and what not to do. Then look at some camps, & email a detailed little letter to the ones whose goals appeal to you, and be ready to tell them why they'll want you, and why you like them. (Theme camp representatives don't come to the Introduce Yourself forum very often.)

If you're looking for a rideshare from SF, post on
http://rideshare.burningman.com

and click Regionals on the main site homepage to look at regional lists. Or google "Green Tortoise San Francisco"; they have a 5 day trip and provide food, water, transport and shade (BYO Tent, etc).

Thanks so much Both of YOUZ for your advice ! I've been browsing through the forum of the 2011 theme camps and i must say its a little overwhelming lol. But its all part of the adventure. I appreciate you expressing some of the pros and cons of the camps. I was a little worried id be left out of the loop hungry and and lonely if i didnt sign up  now i feel a little less anxious!

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

Have questions? Read this first: http://www.burningman.com/first_timers/
Everybody on eplaya is always excited to help first timers; but in sympathy for some of us old timers, please get your required reading out of the way before posting. As hard as it is to rein in the the excitement and enthusiasm, and as unbelievable as it might seem, most of your questions have already been asked and answered, if you just take a moment to read.

Now, let the adventure begin!

Thanks JK ! Reading that was one of the first things I did! If you have any suggestions of camp that you have had experience with that would be most helpful! thanks again

Can you even define what it is that you want or expect in a camp? Or is it all just "I'm so panicked, I'll take anyone who will have me." (Which might be a marry in haste, repent at leisure sort of deal.) Us long-timers will do a lot for a newbies--depending on time and inclination, of course--but we want to see some sort of effort on your part.
And I guess you can put me in the "oh go by yourself, and learn about what you really like about the burn" camp.

You might go with the staggers or endorphins. They are in the theme camp sub-forum.

Stag registration is closed except to Staggers from previous years; Orphan/Endorphan Camp might still be open.
