First-timer saying Hello! from Boulder, CO

Post by CottonwoodJoe » Thu Jul 21, 2011 10:42 pm

Greetings!

I have made 29 trips around the Sun and have wanted to participate in BM for the last 6 or 7 of those trips. I finally have the means to make it happen, so I'm making it happen, with hopes that I will gain a renewed appreciation of humanity. Somewhere along the way, I accidentally became an asshole (albeit a friendly and well-meaning one), but I promise not to spoil anyone's fun while I work on that problem.

I bought two tickets - one for me and one for my brother. Then my brother bailed. So my dad asked if he could go instead. Then he bailed too. So it looks like I may be going solo! I've been studying up on the survival guide and have pretty much everything covered: food + means to prepare it, lots of water containers, a bike + lights, a nice first aid kid, plus lots of other amenities and useful things like rope, sunscreen, TP, dust masks, etc (plus extra for gifts). I'm putting together a Hexayurt for shelter, so I'm hoping to be fairly comfortable out there for a newbie.

I'm really concerned about the drive. Does anybody from CO have any advice? Like places to stop for a nap, or places not to stop for a nap? Not sure I can make it all in one go by myself without a stop somewhere. Our old van had a catastrophic breakdown years ago in Nevada, very far from help before the days of cell phones, so I'm pretty much terrified of that happening again. My hope is to link up with some other folks heading that way and go caravan-style. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!
Elderberry

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Cottonwood Joe! Welcome to ePlaya!
Sounds like your pretty much ready to roll!
Are you riding out by your self?
What sorta vehicle are you taking out to NV?

Here are my tips for driving out to the burn.
#1- Take I80! Not 70. Vehicles loaded with gear burn hella gas going up and down the grades on the way to Utah. I80 has its grades, but not nearly as bad is 70.

#2- Leave with us on the 27th. I have a feeling that we can work something out that will help all of us.

Also, their is a guy on her by the screen name of Soul Drifter, he's not from CO, but is coming through CO. We might try and party train with them too.

Well thanks for the warm welcome and the advice! I will be taking a 1996 GMC van, and was planning to leave on the 27th actually, so that would be awesome if I could join up with you all for the journey! So far it is still looking like I'll be by myself, but am trying to convince my brother to change his mind, seeing as I have more than enough supplies.

I drove solo last year from Northglenn, and I'll be doing the same this year for my second burn. Last year, I stopped in Tooele, UT, (just past SLC) at a TA truck stop for dinner and a nap. This year I'm planning on making it to West Wendover, NV, for my nap.

Looks like you are in good hands with illy dilly's group, but I just wanted to throw in my experience for what it's worth.

Hey DhammaSeeker,
If you are traveling a similar route, why don't we party train. Its looking like we might end up with a HUGE CARAVAN if everything works out.
Also, we might be able to work something out so that you don't have to drive alone. Infact we might need 1 more seat belt, so maybe we could have someone ride with you or something. Who knows.
What day are you leaving?
