Dancing surface on the playa

Post by sparkletarte » Thu Jul 29, 2004 3:53 pm

I've been wondering about the surface of the playa for dancing. I hear it's like talcum powder. Is there a firm surface under an inch (or..??) of powder? Is it like dancing in sand? Do some camps set up floors to dance on (I know this would vary camp to camp and year to year)? I'm not super big on dancing in sand, although it's okay if I take off my shoes. I'm trying to figure out my dancing footware. I know, comfy, blah, blah, blah. I'm mostly interested in the state of the dancing surface.

the ground is dusty, but very firm underneath. Its not like a beach at all if thats what you're worried about. Dancing out there is really great IMHO

dancing out there ROCKS.

it just might be the best dance floor you ever experience. Nice layer of dust to absord the major shocks and let your feet slide. Underneath a firm, but nowhere near rock-hard, layer of packed playa. If your lucky, you'll be dancing your head off somewhere with great folks and suddenly find yourself in a whiteout. Funky Beats+Booty Shakin+Good Friends+White Out = HEAVEN

I danced with a new playa friend for the sun as it went down under tibetan prayer flags last year. Granted, it was a strange sort of contact improv cause we didn't want to get covered in playa - more than we already were - and didn't want to fall too hard.

but it was pretty good. not quite as friendly and responsive as a wood floor, but quite nice.

what kind of dance?
surlier than thou
