Burn Barrels
Burn Barrels
I am confused about burn barrels.
At this site
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/e ... nment.html I am told there will be 200 burn barrels but this site:
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/e ... _guide.pdf
States there are burn barrels (Commandment 5 on the Survival Guide) but Commandment 4 states pack it in, pack it out. And there are no guidelines that I can find on burn barrel usage. I would just like to get rid of paper plates and napkins. So what are the rules for using a burn barrel? Are there set times? I will be happy to haul out a trash bag of ash. Is this expected? Basically I would like some guide lines if anybody knows.
Thanks.

I don't really know anything about this topic, but here are some observations from years past;
I believe burn barrels are only allowed in certain areas of the city (esplanade, center camp, and the 2 villages at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock). The BM people provide the 200 barrels you mention to these areas. The camps these are placed in are responsible for taking the ash away.
Other camps sometimes have burn barrels of their own. When outside the "legal" area for burn barrels, these sometimes get shut-down, sometimes they do not. The reason they limit areas for barrels has to do with fire risk in a tent city. NOTE: this also applys to ANY open flame such as candles or tiki torches.
Anyone burning anything should plan on removing their share of the ashes from the burn barrel/platform.
Having a burn barrel or fire sculpture nearby is really handy on cold nights.

Calsur, for the past two years there have been community burn platforms located just off the Esplanade, usually about every third spoke street. Wood and paper can be burned there but the key is be prepared to haul out some ash and make sure what you burn is non-toxic. In other words don't throw a carpet on there or Kali forbid, anything plastic. From what you posted you should be fine.
As for burn barrels, the org seems to distribute those to various theme camps. Kidsville had one last year that was fed with paper plates and cardboard boxes and it was a great nighttime community spot.
I know I'm not the admin but I hope that helps. I'm going to be burning a few paper plates myself and I have a small christmas popcorn tin and a military style folding shovel for removing some of the ash.

Tancorix,
Thanks for the info. I have a bucket for the plastic that I will dump into my recycle bin at home. The most toxic stuff on the plates will be food fat and mayo or bbq sauce. As stated I want to get rid of paper plates and napkins. I thought the community burn platforms were for burning art projects. My mistake

That sounds more like incense to me.calsur wrote: I have a bucket for the plastic that I will dump into my recycle bin at home. The most toxic stuff on the plates will be food fat and mayo or bbq sauce.

Uh, definitely *NOT* the DMV. The Department of Mutant Vehicles has nothing to do with burn barrels at all.theCryptofishist wrote:I believe that burn barrells are distributed to the camps in question by the DMV. And they take care of them at the end of the event. I was in a volenteer camp last year (2 barrels provided) so ymmv.
Ha. So whom should we ask for that ?
I will be the trash czar of Di5orient this year, and we would LOVE to have burn barrel like last year. We'll hopefully be on the esplanade and a burn barrel on our [url=http://seedwiki.com/wiki/Disorient/urban_plan]BUS STOP[url] , between the zero-G chairs, would be perfect to warm up our late-nite visitors... and help burn the burnables...
Last year, I think we got 2 burn barrels out of the blue... this year I am looking for a more official channel. Although it seems to be true that "The Playa Provideth", we can't always rely on it for every little thing...
So, anyone as a clue of whom to contact to request a burn barrel ?
Cheers
