heyas - so I googled and searched here on eplaya - but didn't see anything for what I was looking for. We are taking our RAV4 out this year and will need a bike rack. I've been looking @ spare tire racks, but I was wondering if anyone has a favorite? any good pros or cons? I would rather trust you people with this knowledge then anyone else!
I've been looking at one called the ACTION RACK ALLEN 303DB SPARE TIRE DELUXE 3 BIKE. on Amazon it's going for about 80-90 bucks. But then over on Wal-Mart they've got it for much cheaper. - I'm kind of skeptical of something so cheap! We will have 2 bikes with us - but I like the idea of the 3 bike rack system.
Thanks for any info.

Re: spare tire bike rack?
I like the ones that mount on a receiver.
Some are much better than others.
Some prefer the rooftop type.
I have a swagman, canadian.
The newer ones hold the wheels on the bottom, which seems like a better system to me.
Swaying can be an issue on the highway.
I used bungees to control this.
Remember that playa bikes are often wider and heavier than road bikes.

There are some threads on this... somewhere... but there are some good bike forums for more detailed info too.

Tread Head makes a good one.

I don't care what the borg says: feather-wearers will NOT be served in Rosie's Bar.
When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.

Re: spare tire bike rack?
This one is ridiculously cheap (as spare tire bike racks go) for 50 bucks. I bought it 3 burns ago and it's still going strong. It ain't pretty, and I reinforce with a shit-ton of bungees (okay, 6), but it does the job. Says it holds 3 bikes. While it holds 2 very easily, it takes us a bit of maneuvering to get the 3rd on, but we do it.
Successful albeit inelegant product for the budget-minded:

I was reaaaalll nervous about quality when I found it one for so cheap (cheapest spare tire bike rack on amazon is 85 bucks), but I've been really impressed with it. It's sturdy. (Also, by jimmying I was able to maneuver it low enough so I can still use the rear window.)
