Hell Yeah I'm going. Since I have learned that what this event is now something else other than what it was founded on, I'm going to make me some frigging money. Sell some food, drinks, might even find me a sponsor so I can advertise a little.

If you're head is stuffed so far up your hippie ass to deny a living wage to the people who spend 40+ hours a week year round keeping this event alive for the rest of us to play in, please stop going and go back to the Rainbow Gathering.
If them not raising the lower tier prices in years, even though they sell out on the first day every year & they could easily raise it to rake in the dough is a conspiracy in your deranged head, please, make your profit and go away.
The last two days have really made me sick of entitled people who seem to think the event is about them and only them, and that by selling out of tickets the event is specifically targeting them.
And if you do go- please please please sell something! I really want to watch them escort your whiny ass out of the event.

Kinda make one want to be on Gate this year. It's going to be interesting.Igneouss wrote:With the current (and growing) ticket madness I guess that there will be record numbers of attempts to sneak in.
This should be interesting to watch.
Make sure that everone in your vehicle has a ticket or things will get ugly for everyone in the car.
One other comment re: 'BM is a business'
A lot of folks are confused by this issue. It's easy to assume that BM is a non-profit/charity/503c type of thing.
It's not. It is a for profit enterprise charted as such (LLC). Make no mistake.
I recall that is will not be a non-profit, but a not-for-profit next year. I'd have to look it up again to recall the difference.

Hmmm...
http://www.tano.org/en/art/1267/
Legal statutes (both federal and state) actually clarify that "not-for-profit" and "nonprofit" are synonymous. However, the IRS does offer a practical distinction in their own definitions. According to the Infernal Revenue Service, "not-for-profit" refers to a specific activity, such as a hobby. "Nonprofit" refers to an organization established for purposes other than turning a profit. This definition does not necessarily mean charitable, but encompasses any organization that does not intend to turn a profit. Amateur athletic leagues, quilt guilds, social clubs, and charitable organizations all fall under this definition.
Color me corrected.

Re: Sneaking into Burning Man
They begin the transition to being a non-profit in about 2 weeks (August 5th is the kick off, if memory serves). The transition is supposed to take 5 years to fully implement. The good news is that the event should be around at least 5 more years!capjbadger wrote:I recall that is will not be a non-profit, but a not-for-profit next year. Re: Sneaking into Burning Man
Your thinking is muddled. You're confusing the cost of setting UP the experiment with the actual experiment itself. The BM Project (as it will soon be called) is about creating spaces/venues/events where the things like community planning, etc can be tried to see if it works. TTITD is one that tries, through the 10 principles, to see if a large group of people can live and work collectively in a different way. For a week or so. Currrently, that takes a whole hell of a lot just to pull off. Some of that takes money.mode-of-operation wrote:Bay Bridge Sue wrote:And yes, there is also the thing this IS a business, not a rainbow gathering, and this IS how some folk earn their living... so if you don't like the business, the answer then would to be NOT to be a customer, don't buy the ticket and be a participant. Simple as that.
Wow! Apparently, according to you, Buringman is a business! So all that crap they spoke of in the early years was basically bullshit. It wasn't about self reliance and helping your fellow man or whatever jibberish they spewed out. This is a shock to me. Really it's not. I know this is about money, just suprised someone on hear admitted to it.
For the last 4 years payroll was around $2,800,000. Then all of a sudden in 2010 it surges in to $7,200.000. A 63% increase, during a recession too! Hey if you can get it, make all you can but don't hide behind some banner of righteousness when it's all about money. So now I definately don't care if some people sneek in for free. More power to them. Somebody is making an ass load of money and if somebody who's trying to save money or can't afford to pay 300.00 for a ticket, I hope they get in for free. The organization is greedy and I expect the people who attend the event to be of the same mindset.
Take a little time to study the end of year reports and you'll see it too. If you can't see it, just keep your head burried in the sand.
Oh and since it's about Larry or whoever making a bundle of cash, don't give me shit about a the RV company name advertised on the side it. If I decide to wear a shirt with a company logo, just shut the hell up because I contributed to the Larry fund just like you. Oh and if you do care about the RV rental company name, tell Larry to start renting RV's. I'm sure he'd rape me on those prices as well. I bet he has real nice RV or probably a giant motor coach.
But don't confuse the prep FOR the event/experiment with the experiment itself.

Re: Sneaking into Burning Man
Nope..not true. You'd leave the event via the Gate exit lane, paying the $20 exit fee for each person in the vehicle if it's after the setup cutoff. You'd have your buddy drive to Gerlach or wherever and pick up the truck and drive it back in. You'd show your exit wristband and ticket stub and come right back in to your camp.capjbadger wrote:IF you knew...
Here's the fun situation:
You are part of a camp and send a large part of your gear in the camp's main truck. You arrive in your vehicle only to find out that the truck driver tried to sneak someone in and got caught and sent away.
Policy states that you can't even come out and drive the truck in. You are screwed.
Better be DAMN sure the driver of your stuff isn't going to fuck up...

Re: Sneaking into Burning Man
Seems like the only solution for someone with an unscrupulous gear driver would be to hope your cell gets the call about the foolish mistake, and that they are thoughtful enough to make the call in the first place (which is iffy). Indeed, then the the innocent party might be able to dispatch the truck of a friend already inside the event for the $20 exit fee and procedure, and transfer the items beyond Gerlach, hopefully not in a manner that impedes traffic, but probably will, irking locals and police. That's a lot of work and depends on a lot of things going eerily right after a major mistake. i.e., there's every reason instead to make sure your gear driver is not an idiot, or a party to idiocy, and sees the tickets, ID and confirmation numbers of everyone aboard.
I do imagine an offending vehicle's license plate would be written down, in addition to tickets being confiscated.

Why is this rant in this thread? Because there's some perceived hypocrisy within the organization, you feel it's OK to sneak in? That doesn't make any sense.mode-of-operation wrote:Hell Yeah I'm going. The event is now and has always been what the participants make of it, regardless of the income it produces for its organizers. You're welcome to make you some frigging money, like many people do, by selling blinkie things, shade cloth, domes, tents, coolers, bicycles, rope, furry boots, and whatever else you want prior to the start of the event. I think you'll find the event much more enjoyable if you embrace the non-commercial aspect of it during the actual week. Come-on! It's a fun game. Relax, and enjoy it. It's more fun than a Sting concert.

A. Burning Man is a commerce-free event.
There are only two things sold in Black Rock City: coffee and ice, both found in Center Camp. Profits from ice sales are given directly to the communities of Empire and Gerlach. Check out the Afterburn Report for Camp Arctica to see the exact distribution of monies. Profits from the café go directly to the commissary to sustain the onsite nutritional needs of our kick-ass staff.

Re: Sneaking into Burning Man
While the event focuses on principles such as Self Reliance, there are something that frankly cannot be managed without infrastructure. The BLM does not even want to imagine what would happen to the Leave-No-Trace if people were responsible for their own portapotties and (human) waste disposal. Additionally, without a refrigerator truck, camps cannot keep ice chests for an entire week without ice.
The coffee in the cafe has always been a "mystery". It is (fairly, I feel) justified as a way to earn money for volunteer services (originally this also went to the community). But there also might be some truth to the idea that espresso beverages, which can't be made while camping, are also a "necessary" infrastructure need for people from SF and Seattle.

Re: Sneaking into Burning Man
I'm so glad they sell coffee. It's civilizing. Humane.
I remember the year my campmate forgot to bring caffeine. I shared my canned coffee for several days, but I didn't have enough for the whole week for both of us; our space was limited.
As it turns out, many people don't really want to take a mile long bike ride for coffee in the morning after 5 hours of sleep and god knows what . . .

They still sell stuff - jus' saying. If I sold coffee at my camp to support a charity distributing food to those starving in Africa, would that be a less worthy cause?Eric wrote:Nope, neither will the Artica outposts.HookahGod wrote:Soooo..
