Playa conditions this year

Post by Irreverent Moniker » Wed Jul 06, 2011 3:00 pm

In case no one saw it yesterday:

blackrockcity Black Rock City
We are pleased to report a very smooth hard-packed playa surface. Best I've seen in years.

"Less dust" doesn't mean "no dust". Trust me, you'll get plenty. What it does mean is that there won't be huge soft spots (basically mini sand-dunes) that trap your bike when you're roaming the playa. Those soft-spots can make bike riding all but impossible in some areas.

Not to mention other kinds of riding.

I hate it when people post photos created by other people and do not even provide attribution, let alone ask permission first.
Would a link have been sufficient, instead of infringing on Danger Ranger's copyright?

I know you are trying to suggest that posting this photo on this forum is covered under fair use, but there are tons of examples of people getting sued for using other's people photos.

http://waxy.org/2011/06/kind_of_screwed/

If there were some sort of commentary about the nature of the photo, how it was taken or some other discussion for which use of this specific picture was required to illustrate what the discussion was talking about, there might be a fair use argument. (For instance, this article discusses the legal issues he ended up in, so he can demonstrate the photo in comparison to his use for discussion purposes.)

And it does not matter how widely the image is distributed--it could be on the cover of Time Magazine--until you have permission to use the photo, better to just link to the page it is on.

I just received this email:

HI Rites of Passage Artists!
Bettie June is already on playa and sent out this wonderful report from the ARTery headquarters!
I wanted to share it with you all as you prepare for your journey and the adventure that is Burning Man!

So without further ado... here is Bettie June:

So I'm in the back of the ARTery office, thinking about you as you pack up your trucks, check your shipments, verify your flights, and more. Before you know it you will be out here! Hurray!

A quick report on things in BRC. Well it's gorgeous -- incredibly hot, with some dust storms, but on the whole really nice. The playa surface has that hard baked surface with the gorgeous cracks. Feels really solid, though we hear the water table is somewhere between eight and twelve feet below us.

DPW is kicking ass! Machinery is working, humming like the well oiled machine we expect. They will be ready to help right away.

Placement has basically everything flagged, and ready to show you to your playa home.

We are finishing the final touches to the ARTery, including putting up the map. The Temple is here, as is Vast and the Pier. Starting to feel that happy buzz of the art percolating.

We cannot wait to see you, welcome you with open arms!! This is it -- what you have been working towards for so so long. It's all coming together, and soon you will be able to bask in the glow of seeing hundreds/thousands smile in delight when experiencing your vision.

Be careful while driving here -- I had one fox and four bunnies jump in front of my car. As Crimson says, miss the cows, hit the suicidal bunnies. We don't want you to get an accident.

Yay! You are almost home!
xo
