We actually didn't have too much luck with 2-way radios the past two years, though we continue to try them each year. We've also found that without being registered and needing a big site for our camp, it's difficult to determine where we will be before we arrive. What did work for us was to register at Playa Info. Two years ago they had a recipe box filled with index cards, but if you were careful to file under the right letter it was easy to find. It looks like now everything is computerized...you go down to Playa Info and register your location via their computers. It is sometimes hard to get a compter during the day, but you shouldn't have many problems at night. Or if you tell someone you've just arrived and need to use the computer briefly to find your camp, I'm sure they'd oblige. Also, last year we arrived around 11pm on Sunday night, and there was only a short line and they had no problem letting us in a little early. We even had friends who came the day before and found us a spot, but weren't in a theme camp. Good luck!

The info on different options for finding people can be found here in the FAQ's: http://www.burningman.com/whatisburning ... at_is.html

Q: How will I find my friends once I arrive?
A: Ideally, pick a meeting point and time in advance. However, there are several onsite resources for locating friends:

* If your friends are in a registered theme camp, its location should be indicated on the city map you will be given at the Gate.
* There will be a map called the "Dynamic Board" at Greeters where you can post the location of your camp once you have established your location.
* The Digital Directory is a computerized directory of BRC camps and addresses. It is located at Playa Info in Center Camp, and also can be accessed through PlayaNet terminals located throughout the city.
* Playa Info (our information booth) is located in Center Camp. The Burning Man Directory is located there. It is a sort of phone book of ALL participants who want to use the service. Feel free to drop by Playa Info and register with them.
* Burning Bell Message Center, also located in Center Camp (next to Playa Info), will have a large Find-A-Camp board for flyers and offers a paper-based messaging service. You can leave and receive messages with Burning Bell from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

You get what you pay for sometimes, and this is one of those times. Those super-cheap FRS radios are junk.
The newer GMRS radios have a 2-watt output, far greater than FRS, and will communicate with existing FRS sets too. You want those. They actually work.

I think we came up with the best solution.

We’re just going to meet in Reno and drive down together. No need for radios and other markers.

Thanks for all the input. If you see our dome please stop in and say Hi. We’ll try to find a spot between the North West Plaza and Center Camp and a few streets in.
