FROGFUFFFIC
Curious as to why this user has not had their account blocked. They've been posting spam for weeks now. Reporting the individual posts is getting boring. ??

At least there are times like these, when it's weirdly funny . . .
I also like it when someone posts something completely boneheaded, and a spambot answers with all due respect and relevance.
(Occasionally it happens to me.)

That was nice but I would've preferred the lottery numbers
Edit: So this comment makes some Frog spammed directly after Savannah's prescient comment.

Because, for whatever reason, nobody has given moderators permission to delete accounts, and those with admin privileges that could delete those accounts don't give a crap about the board and are never here. It's apparent they don't do much more than absolutely necessary when there are serious problems, and nothing as long as the board is limping along.

Soon the storm of ticket threads will be over. I hope the spammers go away too.
Suck it.

Um, JK? Granted we're at the bottom of the list, but don't you think that little thing in the desert we go to in a few weeks might have the admins a bit tied up? Especially with the Shit-storm of the Tickepocalypse?jkisha wrote:and those with admin privileges that could delete those accounts don't give a crap about the board and are never here
It sucks, it will (hopefully) be dealt with shortly after we get back from the playa. Until then, keep pushing that little triangle for our Mighty Spam Fighters to play wack-a-mole.

Re: FROGFUFFFIC
Dork and Emily were the mid-level mods/admins, not at HQ and swamped, but not the daily mods. Dork could and did block IPs, and make tidy little changes such as image sizing, and human recognition for registration. They have moved on. No one has been tapped to fill the gap.
Hell, I resigned and I'm still slogging away in the spam trenches. They're too busy to remove my access, or my resignation wasn't accepted. Bad timing all around.
Just wait until all the mods are at TTITD.

True. I was thinking about mid-September when I posted that, because there could be more 'I didn't get a ticket' whining threads during and right after the event.Ugly Dougly wrote:You'll be squatting in the middle of the desert by that time.Dr Jet Sinister wrote:Soon the storm of ticket threads will be over. Re: FROGFUFFFIC
I don't believe for a minute that it's a matter of not caring, it's about bandwidth. People tend to think of BMOrg as a government with endless resources because it runs a city, but the resources are indeed limited. Most likely for security reasons (the site's been compromised before), certain functions aren't currently able to be managed remotely. If I'm able to get the chance to chat with someone either at tonight's shindig or in the next few weeks, I'll see if there's a way I can use geography to my advantage (I live near BMHQ) and volunteer to come in and help out and see what improvements can be made.

Re: FROGFUFFFIC
Actually, it's likely due to Africa. I read an interesting article a year or so ago that showed the increase in spamming/phishing activity and the spread/evolution of internet access to Africa. There's now an undersea cable connection to the continent, providing reasonable connections to most of the cities on the edge (the middle still has little to nothing), and with the ridiculous levels of poverty in the region it's extremely cheap labor.
I can only hope that one of them can help my Nigerian princess sweetheart get her assets (and inheritance!) released from those evil bankers.

Re: FROGFUFFFIC
After all these years, I just cannot wrap my head around the idea that spamming a forum would lead to anything other than annoying the members of that forum. Email spamming kinda makes sense since some people can think the message is really directed towards them. These spam posts do not look like anything other than spam.
Suck it.

Re: FROGFUFFFIC
Me neither, I just don't see how anyone would really ever click on any of the offers (if interested in what they're offering, the internet is FULL of places to get that junk). The part that humans do is (most likely) set up the accounts for the spambots, who then periodically hit the boards with 1-16 posts at a time, several times per day. Frog, Oblique, and Nerve have been the three most active lately (the latter two dropping 16 posts an hour at times). On average, between 1/3 and 1/2 of it gets flagged for us by you wonderful people, which makes it much easier for us to find and identify the other posts that may be out there. Fingers crossed, though, we'll have some kind of countermeasures in place in the not too distant future.

Is there a captcha (or something) in place? Is that why you think a human set up the accounts?trilobyte wrote:Me neither, I just don't see how anyone would really ever click on any of the offers (if interested in what they're offering, the internet is FULL of places to get that junk). Have you noticed the spambots are having no problems find really old threads to re-activate. It's like JPQ is back, but making more sense.

Re: FROGFUFFFIC
I know people are really busy this time around, but a simple solution would be to give moderators banning privileges. Then the "real" admins don't need to stick around while this trash gets cleared out. It won't clear up all the problems, but the fact that a spammer can repeatedly use the same account really irks me.
