BM Funding Experiment

Post by rodent » Tue Aug 10, 2004 9:12 pm

Howdy fellow burners.

The job market hasn't been kind to me this year and I am having difficulty funding my trip out to the Black Rock. So I had an interesting idea, and experiment really.

I'd like to borrow a dollar from you.0

It will only take up a couple of minutes of your time. Take a $1 bill, put it in an envelope (you may want to fold it into a piece of paper) and send it to me,

Please don't send a check, it will be a pain for both myself and the bank to cash plus the extra time you'd spend having to write it out. I'm trying to make this quick and easy for both you and I.

Since I'll have your return address on the envelope, as soon as I get back from the playa, I'll can send you a dollar back (with a little bonus something).

I thought about using Paypal, but have a couple of reasons why I didn't.

It will be a little easier to keep track of whom to send a dollar back to, taking the time out to address a real letter is more engaging and personal than just clicking a button on a website, it will be interesting to see who decorates their envelope, this day and age it's neat to receive something by snail mail, and I kinda need the envelopes for the extra thing I'm going to send back.

What I'm going to send back is such a cool idea that I almost can't wait untill I get back from the playa. I'd share it here, but I want it to be a surprise (ooooh, it's going to be sooo neat).

This strikes me as the antithesis of being self-reliant.

I don't see it as much different than having a fundraiser/houseparty except that the "donation" will be returned with value added. I hope that I have found a creative way of funding my trip that will foster more community (the surprise).

Lemme get this right.

I send you $1.

You promise to return my $1 sometime after the event.

You do so by post which involvs purchasing not only the envelope but a .37 cent stamp.

You're paying out $1.37 on a $1 loan.

A thousand people collectively send you $1000.

You, being an honest burny type person (and a Ranger) follow through on your promise. You're paying out $1370 on a $1000 loan.

Would it be out of line to suggest that part of your finacial problems just might have something to do with generally bad fiscal mis-management on a personal level?

I smell a turd.

Got math?

I like your moxy, all of you.

As Badger noted, there would be a 37 percent delivery cost on funds sent (cost of a stamp)

There is also a 37% delivery cost (minimum, but I have a feeling it will be much, much more than that.,.... think Stonehenge on your lawn, or Easter Island sculpture wedged beneath your barbeque grill...)

Which is why I like your moxy, kid.

The cash is in the mail.

Or, use a credit card for just a 3% charge on receiver, 18% on you (if you carry it on time).

Oh crap! Just send CASH, 3% is exhorbitant for reciever of your funds when other options are less.
