Spam Flagging
This would be a nice thing to have: a link next to each post that one could use to report a post to the moderators, so that something that really is spam could be deleted by them more quickly.
So there's no misunderstanding: I'm not suggesting that moderation should be crowdsourced, which would raise the issues that come with mob rule. I'm just suggesting that the reporting procedure be streamlined.

Re: Spam Flagging
There is a red exclamation point in each post, to the right (but left of where the avatar would be) in a little white triangle.
Click it, and fill in the info to make an instant spam report. Select that you don't need anyone to respond personally to you about your flagged post--unless you really, really need a moderator reply.

Re: Spam Flagging
Maybe a little exclamation mark inside of an upside down triangle icon? That'd be perfect!

It is a new feature, we have a learning curve here. eventually all the eplayans will notice the icon and use it freely. But yes, things go faster if you do not require a mod reply. One morning I had 40 spam reports to whack!
The ones reporting individuals I leave to the other mods. I liked the one complaining the post contained too much profanity. Goodness!

Well that sucks. Whom can I write an angry email to in order to point out that sillyness? Post-burn, of course.

Re: Spam Flagging
I'm working on a solution to that, and hopefully your email won't be necessary. With AntiM, Bay Bridge Sue, and Andie's help we took out a small hitlist today that will slow them down for a while, and we'll be able to stay on top of things a bit more easily.

Domain name registration for burningman.com: here
The administrative and technical contact listed is Heather Gallagher. You can find her e-mail address through the link I just gave you. I hope that you aren't serious about sending her hate mail, though, because she really doesn't seem to deserve it. One can see moderators abusing the power to ban elsewhere online, so one can understand why she would exercise restraint when it came to passing out that power. Sure, one can think of mods one would probably like to see have that power (eg. AntiM), but if it is given to one mod and not another, this might very well make those who weren't favored resent those who were, giving the latter a whole new headache to deal with.
Running a site the size of the Burning Man homepage is a lot of work. Please do give some real thought to how much work Ms. Gallagher and her team members have done on the part of the community, and ask yourself if you would be showing much appreciation for her portion of that work, if you repaid her for it by giving her grief about a problem that is not of her making, because she made a hard choice that, as hard choices tend to be, was followed by some degree of inconvenience. No matter how some choices are made, something is going to go wrong.

Re: Spam Flagging
Actually, we had a mod with the power to ban, Dork, but he has moved on. Our manager is Andie Grace, not Heather. There's a loose technical/communications divide, and mods fall to the communications rather than the technical. That's a gap which needs to be bridged.
We're working on having a few mods who will have the access to block/ban. And no, one mod would not mind if another has greater access. Mods aren't chosen for their IT skills, they are chosen for their board interactions.

Trilo, Anti, thank you for that useful information. I said quite a while back that I would be a big supporter of broader mod powers; frogfucker is a great example.

In that case, somebody needs to have the information that has been left with Godaddy corrected or updated, immediately. To have incorrect contact information on file is a violation of the terms of use, and grounds for cancelling the registration of a domain.
Godaddy seems to be very fond of doing that. I wouldn't dawdle.

Re: Spam Flagging
I didn't say Heather doesn't have eplaya responsibilities, she is the technical lead. She doesn't oversee the moderators, which is what Andie does. HG would not necessarily be the one in charge of upgrading a moderator's access.
And I think you have too little faith in humanity, the moderators get on wonderfully well. Sort of a job requirement, being able to sort out our differences. Not one of us would see a difference of "power" as being "favored".

And I keep forgetting that ePlayans consider any disagreement with the herd or those who lead the herd to be trolling. An interesting stance for those who attend a festival supposedly devoted to "radical self-expression" to be taking, isn't it? We can all non conform, as long as we all non conform together?

Ah, H&T, you're so earnest you confuse people. And surely you know your communication style comes across as confrontational. It does, honestly. Makes interaction difficult, as most eplayans are being less serious, so ideas get lost in the crossfire. I've gotten used to your posting style, and try to switch gears when I read your posts. You aren't any easy personna to love online, but I don't think you're a troll, or your posts are invalid. Hastily drawn conclusions, perhaps. Just a square peg in a round hole here on the eplaya, you haven't found the right jousting partners. Just my opinion, feel free to ignore it. Or shred it if you like.
Are you sure I can't interest you in just a tiny sip of the Kool-aid?

edited to add: this is me liking you. I hope you understand I'm smiling.

Oh heavens to betsy, what shall we do?
(burningman.com has been the Borgs domain longer than godaddy has existed as a business. godaddy does not decide who gets to be who online. Look up a thing called interNIC.)
