Best place to fill up water and park/camp Saturday night??

Post by Pecho » Wed Aug 10, 2011 11:44 pm

Where is the best place to fill up water coming from east on I-80? Winnemucca? Fernley? I read there is no parking on the highway into Gerlach. I want to fill up my water at a reliable place without driving it 600 miles and I want to get in line early on Sunday. I'm transporting a lot of people so am trying to be efficient. Any tips much appreciated.

There is a rest stop on I-80 just past Wadsworth. You (like tons of other travelers) could stop there! And then backtrack to 447 to head to BM. Once you hit 447 there is nowhere to stop.

This year they are selling bulk water in Gerlach. But I don't know the details, it is posted somewhere here!

The Love's truckstop in Fernley lets people fill up from their potable water hose, but I don't know how much unlimited water they let you have.

I wouldn't drink it unless I had to though. Lots of people handling that hose into shady containers.

I emailed the nice lady at the Gerlach office, she says that they are doing water 24 hours a day from the 27th until the monday and then until 11pm from 8am during the week. They are also selling 5, 10 & 15 gallon containers too...

Considering the people of Gerlach have to pay for their own water treatment plant, the funds from water sales are very welcome she said.

I've booked our RV for water fill up and 2 extra 15 gallon containers for the sunday night...

They seem very helpful!

Question, Pecho...
What do you mean by 'get in line early on Sunday' ?

The gates open at Midnight Sunday(Monday AM)... there is no getting in line early;
if you arrive before midnight, you'll get parked in 'D' lot, which means you'll sit and wait until the entry line has gaps...

Some of us arrive before that and have to bring our own water. Hum... we do have later arrivals who might be able to stock up for us!

What is the price on containers?

I always try to spend some money in Gerlach or Empire to support the local economy.

I guess I'm asking when is ideal time to start driving in on Sunday?

Monday morning? If you leave Reno/Fernley after sunrise on Monday there won't be the huge traffic jam. And getting on playa at 9:00am Monday isn't much different than at 4:00am.

I worked greeters a few years back, and there was a huge line way past sunrise Monday morning. But by mid morning it is gone.

...and, if you've never been, it really is advisable to arrive during daylight hours...
makes it so much easier to find a spot and get to know the neighbors before staking down.

Good advice. This will be year 4 for me and I want to get in as soon as possible (duh) but want to avoid the 8 hour turtle crawl in the dark like I've done before. Thanks for comments
