Re: Where do I camp?
I had no idea before I arrived how FREAKING HUGE it is. Plenty of room for everyone.
I don't know if there's any place that can put you out of the wind/dust, I haven't noticed any. However, you definitely want to use your vehicles as wind blocks as much as possible.

Re: Where do I camp?
Stay away from packs of rvs unless you want to suck fumes.
Stay away from porta potty banks unless you want to smell stank and hear vomit around 4 am.
Stay away from the large sound camps unless you like that sort of thing all the time.
If you head around 9 o'clock and orient everything correctly your vehicle will create an awesome break against the prevailing wind.
The last two years it's seemed 3 o'clock side is a little tamer than 9 o'clock side.
Mostly just look for cool looking smaller camps and park near them.
Ignore the glares of people that rope off massive sections for friends that aren't showing up until Thursday.
Smile and greet your neighbors. They should be your best friends and resource.

Re: Where do I camp?
I am wondering if there are any theme camps I can camp with. I am a virgin traveling from south carolina, by myself, I do have a ride to and from the airport but now I am wondering where do I sleep?
Thanks,
Chelsea S.

Check out this thread for a list of theme camps looking for volunteers:

If you are just looking for a place to sleep and figure out how to be comfortable in the desert, you don't have to join a theme camp necessarily. You can just find a space in the suburbs and set up next to a few friendly looking camps, and by mid-week you will likely have a new group of friends.
If you see a theme camp with a theme that you are excited to contribute to and fits your personality, then go for it.

Just be happy you are getting a simulator bonus, since 90 isn't enough for an elaborate 3 year old saint andrews cross.

Re: Where do I camp?
Last year was my first time soloing it and having to find a spot on my own. Even after 4 burns, I was pretty anxious about finding a spot. I was blessed, and doubt I will EVER get a spot as perfect as the one I ended up with. Actually, I'm likely to find one even better. But it was seriously sweet. No loud RV's or generators nearby, and somehow I ended up with a massive field-sized area in front of my camp, and a view through the next wall of RV's that made the man perfectly visible from my cot outside. I seriously had a ridiculous amount of space around me. Awesome neighbors, but also this delightful, relaxing zone to call my own.
After a year of camping next to some frat types who's vocabulary was made up of variations on the word 'fuck', and having their RV mere feet from my tent, I just couldn't ask for anything better. I'm 26, but I MUCH prefer to camp surrounded by a slightly older crowd.

Re: Where do I camp?
That Monday arrival night has to have been one of the best of my life! And waiting ALL week for that space to fill up around me--I was literally in awe--I've never seen such a large empty space out there. I was between streets, and somehow this huge pocket was left invisible to passersby. Particularly last year, it was just what I needed.
Re: Where do I camp?
I'm really glad you got to experience that.
I count among my favorite memories of my first--or all--Burns: camping at about 9:45 and G and unzipping my tent facing west, and not having anyone between me and the mountains. Unbelievable.

Re: Where do I camp?
That does sound nice.
I sort of live that way everyday here in Taos, but I loved being in between G & H @ 7:00, and being in the middle of things, yet having plenty of space for my own energy. I'll totally aim for something similar this year.
My bigger question this year, is should I line up Sunday night? I'd rather not do an 8 hour wait to get in. Last year I arrived Monday and it took between 3 and 4 hours to get in which really wasnt bad at all.

You both are welcome to join the group at the Shaggin' Dragon. We are putting together an unplaced theme camp. We consist of mostly newbies, but have shade and a motor home made into a dragon. PM me if you are interested. Plenty of room. No demands other than helping to put together the dragon which will provide shade for all. Just a home at Home. I'm based in Oregon, but our members are from all over. Let me know. Mama

Both are surprisingly common.
As is the Thursday friends never showing up and that space never being used.

That's Aeroflot. Blonde ponytail is manditory. Cut it and have a nice trip to Siberia.

Rumor is that it will be rising early this year and by afternoon will be pulsing as it sets.

Re: Where do I camp?
Yes, but you must be polite to your neighbors. This can consist of, but is not limited to:
1--not subjected them to genny noice and fumes.
2--offering to be a windbreak for their tent.
3--hanging out with them in the heat of the day, instead of retreating into the rv.
4--sharing a meal or snack
5--telling them all the really good stuff you saw that day
6--parking a bit back from the road, and having a friendlier facade than an rv wall.
7--more will be suggested...

From the shadow angles, you can see the time difference for the different areas of that photo. I haven't done the math to get the times.
But what day?
I've narrowed it down to Wednesday to Saturday, but...

Hello. I am attending BM for the first time as well. I have a huge tent and all the necessities I need to be self-sufficient, but if you want to join up and start our own "Unofficial" Camp. Let me know!
Hi there,
It is my first year as well. I will be driving down from Hood River, OR. There is a slight possibility that I can stay at someone's camp, but if not, then I am on my own.
I would love to find a few solo travelers to camp with as well. What day are you arriving?
