Re: who needs what
How stupid am I to say I need bike 2,5 week before BM...a lot!!!
However, I really am.
If anyone knows about bike I could have for the week, it would be nice.
Jeez, what was I thinking about!!!

I'm scavenging tiny mirrors... like either small ones for mosaic work or from used make-up shells. Anyone have some they don't want?
Re: who needs what
The bike is secured...thank you Jella

I can't find a place in my town that sells them.. it's kind of weird... thought they'd be easy to find! I'll probably just order some from etsy.

It can be very much an indian ("red dot") thing. I htink they call them shisha(s). That might give you a good search term on etsy.
Me, I can cut mirrors and I can break them. But that's my approach to the issue.

Most stained glass supply shops will be happy to sell you a glass cutter for a few bucks and show you how to use it. Mirrored glass is fairly cheap and even cheaper if you go around the neighborhood on garbage day and scavenge them.
The main thing with mirrors is protecting the silvered edge. If you want it to stay nice looking long term, paint the cut edge where the backing meets the glass with clear nail polish. If it is for short term use painting the edge is unneccessary.
The silver backing on mirrors with an unsealed edge will start to oxidize (siver oxidation is black), and over time become blackened like an antique mirror.
Edit: The above applies only to real glass mirrors. I don't think plastic mirrors are subject to the same issues.

Generally mirrored doors are thicker and therefore take more skill to cut cleanly, but folks commonly throw away smaller mirrors and they usually set them next to the rest of the trash (at least here in NY).
I'd be happy to show you how to cut glass if you were local, but 3k miles is a long way to demonstrate something like that. Just remember, cutting glass is much easier than it seems to be.

Have you noticed that old glass is harder to cut properly than fresh glass?

Older glass is sometimes more brittle, but I don't find it really any more difficult to cut. When I owned the glass studio we actively sought out and used old stained glass since many of the old glass making techniques have been lost and there are colors and textures that are no longer made.
Unless using a diamond saw, glass is cut by scratching it then stressing the crack so if the older glass has any scratches or wear then it can be harder to cut cleanly. Although it seems solid, glass is technically a liquid so depending on how old and the position it was in the thickness may vary as well. A little known fact is that over time window panes get thicker towards the bottom because of this.

Re: who needs what
I don't know if that's "liitle known" because I've seen it over and over again. I've also seen someone say that it's not true, and that it's just that medieval stained glass makers would but the thicker part of the glass at the bottom.
So, I'm not sure what to believe.

Re: who needs what
The effect can be measured in glass that is just a few decades old with a decent micrometer although in only 40 years the difference in thickness would be an extremely tiny amount.
I have limited experience with hot glass work, but to the best of my knowledge medieval window makers used a glass blowing technque - they would blow a large cylinder of glass then lay it sideways on stone and slice the cylinder open and allow the soft glass to flatten out. I am not sure that lends itself well to controlling thickness, but undoubtedly there would be some variations in thickness.

Re: who needs what
Be careful with aging CDs though (is there any other kind nowadays?). I had fashioned a very shiny curtain of sorts out of a couple of hundred CDs and zip ties for my monkey hut. I put them in bags and kept them in the garage. Over several weeks they were moved about, stuff was put on them, not treated gingerly but not stomped on either. I discovered that many of them had cracked, some had pieces broken off of them and some had the silver peeling. As pretty as it was initially I ultimately decided it wasn't worth the potential moop and trashed that whole project. Hopefully YMWV if you go that route.

I used to work @ a university in the IT department. I took apart the old hard disk drives for thsuper magnets. Then i started using the disk platters to make stuff with. I'll bet a local school would give you theirs after they erase & wipe em. You could punch holes with a whitney punch or drill holes and tie em together. Heavier than CD's tho... Might make cool noise but in the desert wind that might not be a good thing.
It'd be cool to wire a fuckton together and stretch it out for a shade structure. It'd look like the Aricebo radio telescope too! Aliens visiting your camp would be awesome. Just think of the gifts they'd have!
