trilobyte--I hope to come by your camp, and that you will concent to hang out for a few minutes on the 'ground floor' with me.

Re: Work in Progress
Thanks for the kind words. The whole process has been both a great learning experience and a lot of fun, and I'm a little shocked and surprised that things have been going so well (so far). And of course, Crypto, I'd be happy to hang out at the ground level - we'll have a sizeable shade structure behind the van/facade.

Re: Work in Progress
Unfortunately a heavy day of site stuff *cough* spammers *cough* kept me from making any real progress on my bike or painting the facade. But I did get a lot of stuff in our loft re-arranged to make room for the painting, went through a few more bins, and we got our main kitchen bin sorted and packed. It's been a very 'small victories' kind of day, I'll take what I can get.

Badger,
I meant specifically the makers, doers, and rockers in this thread. I know they read here (might not read the other thread) cause they post here and I like see them in the process of working on their projects. I'd post some of me while I work but my situation is rather fucked in not having someone well enough to assist me. Working photos also lend an aire of verisimilitude to the creative atmosphere

Re: Work in Progress
We are going to have pink "astroturf" in our camp lounge this year. I decided to singe the edges with a torch to mitigate MOOP. There are two pieces 8'X15'. I also placed grommets every 4' to nail them to the playa. I only got one done today though. I actually worked 7 hours this morning, which was much less than my usual 10 hours,,,, YAY!
While waiting for Trish to bring more grommets home, I also enhanced the sybian's appendage with a dildo. The only way I've found to create a decent hole in them is to use a SS kabob skewer. I heat it red hot with a torch and melt my way in to the phallic member with the care of a sculpter. It took about an hour to get it just right.

Cool pics, nice to put some faces with some names.
Christ on a bike, Badger, that other thread is 24 pages long and chock full of broken links! Considering how few recent posts are in it, is anyone game for starting a 2011 edition thread?

Re: Work in Progress
In the last 24 hours I've wired up the tail light converter, the 7-way trailer outlet, and the Tekonsha P3 brake controller. Installed about 45 feet of 12 ga wire, 15 feet of 14 ga, 2 self resetting relays, and 30 PanTy's (Panduit brand zip ties. That's what they call em!).
From amidships to the aft end I used a 4 foot long piece of 1/2" I.D. PEX pipe as conduit to protect the two monster hot wires from the rear suspension components. That worked very well. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Everything is done as far as trailer towing goes. Now I just need to finish the trailer plumbing, layup some fiberglass patches on the shower floor and wall, and staple some carpet down over the new pressure-treated plywood floor. A few other things need doing as well but those are the majors.
Gonna pick up the Honda EU2000i generator tomorrow or Saturday.
Gettin close to done...
Sweetpea was feeling well enough to come out of the house and scare me! She had the camera and snapped away.
She also brought some other items out to take pics of me with. See the 'Time for a Happy Thread' thread for some playa wear... Heh heh...
I had my head stuffed under the dash workin and cursin when suddenly...
I felt her doing something with my crotch. Whatever. I wasn't gonna complain. I couldn't see from down there. I didn't know til I put the SD card in the netbook and saw this. That's my Domo backpack as seen at Compression in Reno. Sweetpea is one funny gal.
The work is done and I'm finished. Whew. She wouldn't let me rest. She got me out of the truck for the other photo shoot...
Now I'm totally exhausted.
G'night!

Incremental progress - got the canopy to hang how I want it. Now just need doors and a balcony on top. Time. Running. Thin.

Built sides on the flat utility trailer I borrowed. Should be good now to haul all my misc. with me, hopefully without being harassed by the police about unsecured cargo.

You could use some hooks or D rings on those sides, give you something to attach your straps/cords to.melodiousdirge wrote:

I have a left over 8x16 foot billboard tarp. My plan is to put grommets along the edges of it, and use a bunch of 9" bungees from the grommets down to the lower edges of the trailer. D-rings would be uber slick though... stop giving me ideas!AntiM wrote:You could use some hooks or D rings on those sides, give you something to attach your straps/cords to.

Re: Work in Progress
Blarg! Been working on a basket liner/lighting project for my bike for the last several days, and met with frustration at every turn. My grand plan was to do a laser cutout of a couple designs on 1/8" thick pieces of wood (as a mask), then light it from behind using some EL wire I had laying around from a previous year's project that went in a different direction. After a couple different approaches to the problem, I hit that wall of "this just isn't going to work, stop wasting your time on this" (you know the project, the one that over-stresses you and consumes all that extra time you don't have two weeks before Burning Man?). Of course, I have a few different ideas on how else I can approach the problem, but at this point those are solutions to try next year. Falling back to a more simple design, so I can finish off the project and move on to the rest of the things on the list.

Re: Work in Progress
A warning about those billboard vinyls, they fray and wear holes in them if you have edges rubbing them. Oh, they last, but they can fail in odd ways. Have a handful of cheap ratchet straps as a back up plan. We have mesh sides on our trailer, with wooden slats above that, and our vinyls still take a beating.melodiousdirge wrote:I have a left over 8x16 foot billboard tarp. Re: Work in Progress
I thought I was done with my Preying Man Toss project (Nellie the human powered catapult in the guise of a praying mantis). I ran into a hiccup with the LEDs I was planning to attach to the projectiles, I had thought somehow that the way I attached the finger LEDs would prevent them from taking much of the impact of landing but I was wrong. Several stopped working, several broke the nylon finger straps and others split wide open. At this stage of the game I guess I'll be going with glow sticks anchored with Gorilla tape or maybe enclose the finger LEDs in a clear ball or something along those lines. Back to the drawing board.
I originally thought I'd be able to construct this in such a fashion that it would be fully operational with all components intact. It turns out the positioning of the throwing arm and the weight of the head/arm assembly make this near impossible. Even weighting the business end with rebar and reinforcing the throwing arm with an insert didn't do the trick. It was too unwieldy, there was too much stress on the arm and the head would probably not stand up to the repetitive motions. Because this has to fit in a small vehicle I had constructed it in modules so the first concession was to remove the head assembly when in operation and leave it as a static "sculpture" when not in use. This will also involve reorientating the throwing arm once a day when in "display" mode. Function over form.
Secondly I'm not at all happy with the paint job. I had tested with a lighter green but due to my color perception issues I picked up the wrong brand/color when I bought the paint. I will probably speckle a much lighter green over the darker green.
Thirdly, I hadn't realized the outside range would be as far as it is (150 feet). The plan is to have Toddler Tweets on the street with this immediately behind it. Originally I had asked to be placed in deep playa but after speaking with the ARTery folk we mutually agreed that an alley adjacent to my camp was the best solution due to potential moop (and I'm sure liability concerns). What this means is that I will need to mark off a 25' wide corridor the length of an entire block, not the ideal situation. Because of this and the Toddler Tweets tie-in I will be camping on Kindergarten, I'm thinking I will run Nellie on Tue-Thu nights and disassmble and free up the corridor on Friday for incoming campers (assuming I'm not asked to do so sooner). This also means I will need to be near midblock in order to leave ample room for those camping on the hour sides.
I know it looks more like a grasshopper or a cricket than a praying mantis, maybe hallucingenics will help.
The original green:

Here's some shitty video. hopefully the darker setting and glow sticks will make the lights a bit more distinctive.

As for Toddler Tweets it's had it's fair share of disapointments too. The varnish I used gave the blocks an unnatural yellow patina, hopefully once they get dusty it won't be too noticable. I have no idea what extended sunlight will do. The boatload of cheap disposable cameras I bought bit me in the ass. In my testing to determine optimum distance of camera placement I've discovered the viewfinder isn't calibrated to the actual picture frame. So to capture all the blocks in the viewfinder you need c, 30' which in reality yields a wider field than necessary. Rather than ask participants to take a leap of faith and center the shot cutting off both ends I will leave the camera at the 30' spot and probably crop the pics afterwards.

Actually I need two:

That's if I can get the boys into the vehicle.
In short, it's been frustrating. Granted it's my first attempt at anything like this and having to take transport and limited funds into account I have mixed feelings as to where I ended up. Whatever, I'm better for having done it and hopefully it won't be a total disaster on playa (but I'm ready if it is).

Sic pup, I can spare some glow in the dark powder if that will help. You can mix it with clear paint on the projectiles and forget about led's.
