How long does it take to get out on Sunday?
Hi
I'm trying to figure out what time I'd need to leave BM on Sunday in order to make an 11am flight out of Reno? Or a 12:30pm flight? Is there a line already on Sunday morning as people are leaving? What about Monday morning?
I have a flight on Monday, but thinking of changing to Sunday to make the Manu Chao show in NYC ;)
Is it worse Sunday or Monday morning?
Thanks!

Agreed with dinks. Leaving when it's dark is a bit faster, and--deconstructed--the above estimate is spent thusly:
Exodus - 3 hours (on average)
Drive to Reno - 2 hours
Be early for (domestic) flight - 2 hrs recommended by most airlines
Wiggle room - 1+ hrs (car wash, etc)
8 hours from playa to flight is not unreasonable at all. Leaving during a high traffic time (7am 'til?) could take longer.
When in doubt, leave extra room.
And don't forget you'll need leave time to clean up after your camping area. You've gotta comb the area with a trash bag and get even the tiny stuff (much easier never to let anything hit the ground).

Thanks! I'm catching a ride with others who are continuing on. So no car wash or anything. Just need to arrive 1.5-2 hrs before the flight just in case. Not checking bags and cutoff is 45 mins.
So Sunday vs Monday is about the same? 3 hours to get out?
I'm also considering riding my bike yo the front of the line and begging for rides in exchange for the bike :)
I thought the drive to Reno is closer to one hour. Traffic?

Yeah, 4-5am is an excellent time to leave, any day. I did that once, with no waiting other than the 5 mph crawl to gate, but I can't remember how long ago . . . it was 2008 or earlier. When I started attending, the city was less than half the population it is now.In 2009 I left about 4-5am on sunday and there was essentially no delay getting onto the highway. (unless you count the 5mph speed limit a delay) I didn't try that last year though, so not sure if it was just a fluke.
Cookie, I've seen Gerlach to Reno quoted at 2 hrs at least a dozen times. You can Google map it.
A 3 hour exodus is very typical Sunday or Monday. 2 hours is possible, but with the record attendance expected, I wouldn't count on it. If you leave between 2am-5am, you might get lucky.
It sounds like it's not life or death for you, so maybe you should just wing it and see.

Five hours to get to the gate
Left at 10am on Sunday, took seven hours to get to I-80
Leave early, yes. We were still out at about 3am Sunday morning and there weren't many people headed for the exit. Although there were a few trying to catch a ride to the airport.

Sunday takes about 24 hours. Same as Monday through Saturday.

If you start your car moving from camp before 8:00am, you will have no delay getting to the road. To figure the 2 hour drive, plus the fucking TSA airport bullshit and a possible accident on the road, you should be moving from your camp no later than 6:00am. You can add a bit more if you want, but that should give you enough time.
I have an 8:00pm flight, but want to get the hell off the playa before the traffic clusterfuck, so my day is not spent sitting in traffic. I will be moving by 8:00am.
