Post stupid questions here

Post by maryanimal » Wed Aug 10, 2011 2:04 pm

Ok, I'll post the first stupid question.(big shock huh?) Coming. South from Spokane WA, and passing through Alturas CA, is gerlach above or below the. Playa?
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Alturas to where to where?

Gerlach is just south of the playa. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=black+roc ... &gl=us&z=8

You won't need to pass through Gerlach, either, if you're coming from Alturas. You'll glimpse it off to the right side, and turn left, away from it. Fuel up completely in Alturas and you won't need to go into Gerlach at all (unless you plan on using gasoline during the week for some reason).

Well, Gerlach will be a madhouse anyway; not it's normal peaceful self at all. If you leave BRC at a slow or atypical time, however, it's fun to drive into Gerlach and get your car washed.

You can also look at Gerlach on Google Maps street view. :)

I had to go into Gerlach one year...

NEVER AGAIN!

The last town with services those of us coming from the Pacific NW drive thru is Cederville. Sweet town, lovely people. They have the absolute last gas station before you reach the playa. They will have BBQ and car wash happening when we're heading home. The diners are good. All in all, an adorable little town that has embraced the Burning Man community (and our money) for several years.

I love Cedarville! They have such gorgeous old houses and for sure, the people seem friendly.

I'm always coming in at night and so I've never wanted to assume their gas stations are open (hence an evening fill-up at the Alturas Chevron) but on the way back in the daytime, it's an excellent place to get gasoline and gaze across their fields.

How much can I buy water for at Burning Man?

Where are the communal outlets (for my hair straightener)?

Should I soak my tampon in rubbing alcohol before placing it in the porta potty?

When do I receive my camp assignment?

What is the curfew for amplified sound, so I can yell at my neighbors to turn their music off?

Can I stay in your tent?

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

And they don't tend to ask questions.

Here's one....Two of my campmates who will already be there (preopen), need to leave the playa on Sunday night the 28th to go to Reno. Should they expect major delays? Are the roads "one way only" (inbound) during sunday afternoon evening?
Thx

There is an exit lane (far right) heading off the playa. Yes, they will need to join the existing line to get back into the event. Depending on time of day, there may be a delay. (ie: As it gets close to midnight the line will morph from long to insanely long to absurdly insanely long...)

Thankee. They'll come back out to BRC on Monday afternoon so will miss the worst of the incoming traffic.

I have a question.

Why does he say 'Serious inquiries only.' ?

Exactly what does that mean?

I usually see it on ads that don't have enough info for anyone to be interested anyway.
In this case, with that price, they won't be bothered at all.

I think it means, "this isn't a serious ad, just don't annoy me about it".

Ouch.. dangerous. Very dangerous. I would strongly advise telling them to leave before dark.

Good point junglesmacks. Talk about swimming upstream!

Everyone is strongly urged not to pass cars on the way out to the Playa, but people still do, and that, combined with the excitement of it all, becomes very dangerous if you are driving the opposite direction.

Can they leave earlier in the day?

Does anyone know why this year the crew set up 9 miles of trash fence while last year it was 7?

I find this particularly curious given the projected number of attendees basis ticket sales.

One can assume that the side of the pentagon that is the exclusion area went from about ~1.4 miles to ~1.8 miles, assuming that all 5 sides were fully fenced (with a small gap for the Gate).

1.4 x 5= 7
1.8 x 5=9

Gate is 1 mile outside the city (ie: it is 1 mile from gate to greeters)

I believe the area around center camp is deeper than it was last year...

Ok, I have this big ol' rubber mallet, Do I need a regular hammer to use on rebar stakes? I can just picture using the rubber mallet and hitting a stake and having it come back up and hit me in the forehead.

and question #2. You know that green carpet stuff that looks like astro turf that RVer's usually have as a "patio", of you will, under their awning area. What's it really called and where do you get it? Home Depot? Lowes?

Answer to Question 2: They can be called Patio Rugs/Mats (can be astroturf or other patterns), Artificial Turf Rugs (definitely astroturf looking, your stereotypical green carpet), or Outdoor Carpets (can be astroturf or other patterns). Best bet would be searching either Patio Rug/Mat or Artificial Turf Rug. I doubt that a regular hardware store would have them, if you're in a bigger metro area try an RV supply shop that caters to those kinds of accessories. A google search brings up "Camping World" with locations across the US, and they have it in stock online. Otherwise hit the yellow pages and look up RVs, it shouldn't be too hard to find a place. The stuff is pretty cheap, and we love using it at our camp.

A rubber mallet will not drive rebar well, steel will serve you far better. But I like the comedy of doing a 3 stooges with it.

Be very careful with the astroturf outdoor carpet. It is banned in all camps in Terminal City, owing to its tendency towards MOOPiness. Look synthetic fiber rugs instead.
