Not speaking for other folks, but the main reason I kep coming back to this thread is that I'm concerned that, even though most folks recognize Rex's bitterness and lousy logic, some new Burners might think some of his claims are factual, and I feel the need to correct them. Such as:

its not the cars causing most of the erion its rakign the entire BM site with a chain link fence and disturbing the top 6 inches or so of soil that loosens up the surface.
vehcles maybe go down 1-2 inches max and if it has a hard crust they dont even break through that.

Why would a chain link fence (maybe 50-70 pounds) do more damage that a vehicle tire (one ton over four tires)?

they drag it it over the playa to turn up the top few inches of the lake bed. its purpose its to turn up the top few icnehs to suposibly brign up the trash that is underneath. it is also used to help with burn scars.

On the stipulations BMORG says that they use techniques dedveloped in 1998. 1998 and 1999 they basically did that almost anywhere.
I am glad to hear they are not doing that everywhere( well where peopel camped and art burned)
maybe they need to chnage their stipulations and operation plan they file with BLM.
I still can easliy say the BM disturbs the dirt over a much larger area than the rest of the lake bed.

But i am glad to see the BM doesn't do a technique that is very damaging to the Playa.

I do know that BM produces more dust than any other part of the playa. ask locals they will say that the dust stroms around the BM area are worse then any other place on the playa. (that means they have much looser soil in the BM area)

I make sure i visit the BM site when i go out to the lake bed.
I explore the whole region and probably know it better than 95% of the peopel that visit the playa (locals excluding)

if no damage is occuring then why does BLM have enviromental regulations?
why has no one done a full blow EIR? in almost all cases of a yearly event like this in a sensitive arera they would have required a full blown EIR by a indepenedent 3rd party.
is BLM /BMORG afriad what it will turn up?

hopefully one day we will see what a detailed study actualy shows instead of just some first level unpacts and not dig deeeper and se what long term effects are being caused.

on that front the semprera powerplant is goign to do a full blown EIR (that is why they are gathering data as we speak) and that will be abnalyzed and a cost benefit analysis done and if the EIR shows its worth having the pwerplant there they will have it. (after public comment period)

so why has BMORG not done a EIR? *yes its expensive) but if it is done they coudl say to people like me and other that a study has been completed by a 3rd party soruce and we are not doign any long term inpact on the playa. or maybe we are doign a small amoutn of damage.
now all BLM and BMORG can say is umm well we dont think any damage is being done but well we will sue you if you stand against us (the county was threatend to be sued) or we can say whatever we want about the oposistion knowing that its doubtful BM will get sued becuase it expensive. i think the EIR route would solve most problems and stop most of the arguments we have here on the Eplaya

After reviewing the BLM Winnemucca office website and the various articles on BM 2004, it appears that the Trego Hot Springs are closed for the duration of the event. If you are camping there it appears to be a direct violation of the public closure order.

(Notice I use the word "appears" twice. I didn't see anything specific about Trego except the ORG has to have people patrol it, and it seems to fall under some of the closure order markings shown on the .pdf.)

Besides, if you are there, others will think they can do the same. Maybe you should think twice about your choice of campsites during the duration of the event.

and if BM attendees do show up dont worry BLM rangers will kindly escort them away. But no cite BMORG as a rules viloation.
and as usual the earthguardians will eb there but will probably not say anything to any buring man attendees when they show up. Yes Earthguadians are stationed at trego and Blackrock and double hot springs but from my observations they dont do any good as they say nothign to the people from BM. In fact I have seen a coupel of them go in for a swim a direct violatiton of the BM permit. plus some have been droped off with no water or food. and left for 8 hours in the hot sun.

and Gypsum has to be mined for plaster board. Gypsum only occurs in certain places and Emire happens to be one of those places. I never said I was against the plant. In fact mining ha to be done and it looks like empire gypsum plant does a decent job of it.

if the lake bed is not good enough then why does BLM has enviromental regulations unless they are worried about something and it is hard to be worried about somehting if you dont have any idea about what could be done. I haven't been back since '97 so I can't attest to any increase in number, but it is not a new phenomenon. Or would that be penhonmonnh?
