Looking for a camp!

Post by JanDD » Mon Aug 15, 2011 10:36 pm

Hi!

I'm a 26 year old Belgian travel writer and photographer, looking for a cool camp to stay at Burning Man and share the costs. I'm looking for a bed or a safe spot to put a sleeping mat, some shared facilities like a kitchen and a safe place to put my camera away.

I'll be doing a writing and photography project at Burning Man. I'm really stoked about it already. Would be great if someone has an available spot for me. If you have a theme camp or art project, I'll be happy to join in on the activities!
I'm also looking for a ride, from San Francisco er possibly elsewhere.

For the ride portion, try:

http://rideshare.burningman.com

Or fly to Reno with clothes and goggles, buy everything else at WalMart, & use the rideshare desk on the first floor of the airport near the baggage carousel to try to get matched with a ride.

There's also a hostel called Green Tortoise in San Francisco that has 5-day trips to the playa supplying water, shade and transport, and for an additional fee, food as well. You bring your own tent, etc.

Thanks for your advice!
Trishntek, the retrofrolic camp seems great, but it's more something I would do if my girlfriend would have come along too.
The Green Tortoise camp seems a bit touristy, more like a hostal trying to make money out of it. I'm affraid I wouldn't get the real Burning Man experience like that.
But I'm open to all suggestions. Please let me know if you have a spot in your camp and want to know more about me.

Though I've never tried them, I'm pretty sure Green Tortoise is overrun with modern-day neo-hippies, internationals, students and combinations of all three. They do not provide an overly plush experience. Gas, shade, food, & water actually cost a lot. And while those are fewer amenities than the average theme camp, theme camps don't usually help you get to the playa--which is the largest cost.

Much more touristy are the luxury RV deals one sees posted here, or the package deals posted on eBay.

If you still want a camp (in addition to a ride) I would send a nice email to available camps in the 2011 Theme Camps Forum near this one. They do not tend to read individual threads; most wait for people to come to them. They want to know what you have to offer, and why you would fit with them. Pick one that makes sense to you, as most require a bit of $$ and labor, and you'll want to enjoy it even when there's work involved.

I called Green Tortoise right after tickets sold out thinking they had some tickets available for customers who book a Burning Man trip. They told me that their Burning Man trips are all filled up.

Good to know, thank you. They had not marked on their site that they were sold out, though I suppose it's not too surprising by this time.
