babyrocks-
define 'self-reliant' please.
define 'radical' please.
look'em up in a dictionary if you have to...
now put them together.
.....great, now grab your baby and go. off into the world. ask nobody for their opinions. just trust your own instincts...everything will work out in the end.
sail around the world in a 15' laser.
run with the bulls in pamplona..
go spelunking in kentucky..
hitch hike!
live with complete strangers.
go ahead. there are parents that do less and don't pay attention to their kids...
it's ok.
good bye

Yes, but do those two docs that know you, know Burning Man? Have either of them been to the event? I'm sure your explanation of the conditions was a bit sugar-coated to say the least.
And finally, since you have obviously made up your mind, why are you even posting about this any longer? It doesn't appear that you will get any validation of your decision here, as nobody wants to feel they are contributing to whatever might happen to that baby when you bring her.

and what is with all the people who brought there kids and said it was good for them too?
it would make a difference, the helpful and writings who are wrote with knowledge and not just assumptions and non knowledge.
i also askd two docs who know me, both said its ok.

Re: Baby at BM, experience? preparation? what? where?
I'll toss in my 2 cents here.
My family is from central Nevada, and have raised numerous kids in the desert... on top of that, we've done our share of desert camping before we ever THOUGHT of something like burning man.
The event - is NOT like living in a house in some goddess-forsaken bumfuck nowhere. You are subjected to lousy weather, no heat, no cooling, no ready access to running water, or access to a doctor (save REMSA, er, HGH, and you really got the $$$ to have your baby medevacced to Reno?). It's in the middle of, literally, one of the most inhospitable places on earth, and never mind your baby, YOU could get injured or die otu there (and then who's gonna take care of your baby? That raver in the tent next door? The cat with the leer in the art car? The drunk bartender at the boomboom camp on 10:00, or one of his exstacy and overfucked up customers?)
While you may think you're prepared for what you're planning on doing, I will tell you this. NO ONE IN MY FAMILY would have taken any of the kids camping untilt hey were after 2. Why not? They wanted them to reach 2. Sure, the women would go camping when they were way along - my aunt was 8.5 months carrying my cousin Scotty during one campout - but it's NOT taking the unprotected, fragile, physiologically challenged kid out there. Not even me, and I missed out on a 4th of july celebration out at the mine that was worthy of its own regional - Why? Because my daughter was all of 13 months old, and my family would have killed me. Plus, it would have been Irresponsible.
Call your local CPS office. Don't give a name or anything, but ask them if they think it's wise to take an 8 month old to burning man. Um Hmmm... thought not.
Sure, there have been people who have take infants out there, but people also do massive quantities of drugs and/or wander into the open playa without water out there or expose themselves to benig dosed or, well... and what about that?
What if someone doses your coca cola? What if you get REMSA'd off the playa? Who's gonna take care of your baby? You gonna foist it off on some burner, causing drama and resentments? You gonna HOPE your infant can wander from camp to camp to get it's own food and water and clothes and change its diaper and stuff? Worse... what if someone snags your baby? Is that a good idea?
Personally... I know you want to burn, hon, but I've never seen a responsible parent put anything above their kid.... and those that do either get their kid taken away from them or killed. Point blank. And even IF you're there 24/7, and hang in camp witht he kid... what kind of burn is that?
Ask this Native Nevadan who grew up in that environment... Leave your kid at home with someone responsible while you burn... or don't go. Period. Be a PARENT, not a kid.

I listened to that interview a few days ago and even they recommend bringing a baby pool to fill with a little water. Listen to the part about when the baby overheats. Listen to all of their advice, because it's all really good. And then listen to it again.BabyRocks wrote:https://www.fuzemeeting.com/replay_meet ... e9/1545053
I think that if you had been planning for the last year to take your 8 month old to the playa, that you would likely be well prepared. But you seem to have just started thinking about it last week, and you probably won't be able to think of everything.
Plan for the very worst. Bring formula in case your milk goes dry. Bring something to seal those dirty diapers in so you don't have to smell them all week. Please get a MURS radio, or if you can't afford that, take a trip over to the nearest med tent or ranger station so that you know where it is and what it looks like in case of emergencies.
I still think that you shouldn't take your baby. I don't think you're being selfish, I think that you think that you and your baby will have a great time together. I still think it's a bad idea, especially without an RV. Try to park your car by the road in case you have to leave early because it becomes too much.

Ok, out of curiousity I'm actually listening to the webcast you posted.
Which of those things are you doing? Are you camping at Kidsville? Have you even asked? Do you have a MURS radio? One of the presenters says "I have to say, having my babysitter on playa...." do you have a babysitter on playa? Do you plan to get insurance to cover in case you need to have your baby evacuated? Are you getting a cool mist humidifier? Are you getting air purifiers? I don't suppose you have a generator anyway, do you?
Oh, how about this quote? "with their lungs, it can be tough. I'll be honest and say, as long as we're out there, it is tough on his lungs. As soon as a dust storm hits he is in the trailer... He comes back typically with a cough, for a couple of weeks."
This is with a trailer, a babysitter, electricity, air purifiers.
I think you may have only heard "play pool" because that's what you can afford. Don't do it.

Re: Baby at BM, experience? preparation? what? where?
Have you not even thought of the possibility of heat stroke to your baby?
What sort of time table do you consider "safe" for restricting your daughter's oxygen in a confined, hot, muffled space with restricted air flow?
WHY THE FUCK HAVEN'T YOU GOTTEN YOUR SHIT TOGETHER BEFORE NOW?
Just that fact alone speaks multitudes against your base intelligence.
You think it'll be okay to sit in a van at high noon when a dust storm hits for 3+ hours?
Oh wait, no you said you'd put her under your coat in a sling. That'll sure be safer.
...Moron.
Better hope and pray that she doesn't develop playa lung/pneumonia because of your selfish ass. You will not be able to keep her from breathing it in.
And I'm SURE you think your baby is above average. No parent will admit to themselves that they think their kid is meek and as stupid as all other 8 month olds come. But shit, your baby isn't going to know to close her mouth, shut her eyes and hold her breath when she sees a plumb of dust coming at her. How much dust is she going to get in her eyes/mouth before you're able to secure her? You're willing to submit her to this sort of harm that can occur in just SECONDS?
You're asking if she will keep her goggles/mask on? Idfk, she's your kid. Wrangle her up and do a test run. Does she keep them on unattended for more than 30 seconds?

Babyrocks. Revisit your original post. Then reread the answers given from another perspective.BabyRocks wrote: But thought maybe to try to build a kind of thing 10 times bigger than a stroler with a roof where she can enjoy her time and i just push her around and enjoy mine too
but nothing is worse to risk her. so:
Here my questions:
Is RV/Van necesary?
How to make them drink enough when they r used to breastfeeding (only rarely water)?
Sunscrean yes, no, how often (while long shirt and trousers and big heat and as much shade as possible?
What cloth and where to get them?
Earplugs yes no, which ones? (on ebay r that big ones for babies, did anyone try them at all?)
Diapers, they warm a lot, any suggestions on that?
How is Kids camp?
How to carry them during the day in the best cooling way?
etc. Please as much info as possible.
Have you built this monster stroller yet?
Have you started getting your baby used to water?
...bought the material for some baby salwar kameez or equivalent and started sewing up a bunch of them?
...applied to Kids camp?
If you're going to do this, at least do it right.
Remember your original thought. "Nothing is worse to risk her!"

Re: Baby at BM, experience? preparation? what? where?
Ok, let's try this. I agree, btw, that most american parents are overprotective. They want to keep their kids protected from one in a million type risks, and that's not realistic. But what kind of risk is acceptable?
My personal estimate (pulled out of my ass) is that the risk of something catastrophic happening if you bring your baby to the playa is probably somewhere between 5% and 15%. That's somewhere between a 1 in 20 and a 1 in (about) 6.
By catastrophic I mean: Something that permanently damages your baby's health, or that does serious short term damage to your baby or that requires playa evacuation.
Heat stroke, lung damage, accident. Or damage to you that leaves your baby unprotected.
So let's do a an imagination exercise. What's a way we could imagine a 1 in 6 chance of damage to your baby. You're familiar with Russian Roulette? Put one bullet in a chamber of a revolver, spin it, point it at your head, and pull the trigger. Ok, but in this version you point the gun at your baby. Go ahead. Pull the trigger.
As you decrease your guess of the odds of damage to your baby, you have to imagine a gun that has more chambers. At 10% risk, that's a 10 chamber revolver, with 1 bullet in one of the chambers. Now can you pull the trigger? 9 times out of 10 your baby will survive. Is that an acceptable risk? How about 1 in 20? Can you pull the trigger then?
People are going to disagree about what that risk percentage is. How many empty chambers in the gun before you'd pull the trigger?

The other factor in this is the mother's insistence on going and putting her own good time above the well being of the child. Obviously, that's worth more to her than the blatant safety of her kid.. so..

personally, i think Oakland is more dangerous than black rock city.
but then again, i would'nt bring my child to oakland either.

In any case, it's her choice.
My one last question would be: "Have you ALREADY got your ticket?", and if not I do hope that you are aware that there are NO tickets being sold at the gate this year. I got a fleeting moment of panic this morning after having left for work, that you might show up hoping to get a ticket at the gate.... with no backup plan.
This would definitely NOT be the year to attempt this plan. Most especially with a baby.
