Hello, chance flash lightning, nice to finally say hi!
Hello and happy ramp up time all... I feel like the synchronicity is ramping up, do you?
So... this is my first post! It would appear that I joined eplaya in 2008, but I have an odd feeling that I had another log-in before that. I didn't have much internet access for a quite a long time, and while that has changed, I still haven't broken the non-posting habit (developed by wanting to read so much, and feeling never caught up in the short timeslots I had... also, I'm a wee bit of a hermit, I am discovering). So here we go! There are a few (or maybe many) discussions in which I've wanted to comment, but delayed, because I hadn't written an intro.
I am Chance, I live in Portland, and this will be my 6th consecutive burn. First time going totally solo, no passengers, no camp, etc (did a solo-ish voyage but picked up a rider and camped with Diva Boot Camp in '07)... I am looking forward to having some time on the drive down this year to *stop* and get out of the car and see some bits of Oregon/CA/NV that I haven't had the pleasure to breathe in yet. This year will also bring my burn-means-packing-all-of-your-things-up-and-putting-in-storage percentage back up to 50%. (Well, at least this time I have a house to return to, just looking for a new one. And most everything will be in storage. Except the dog and cats.)
Random thoughts about this year: Perhaps I need a new name. I am looking forward to putting in a bit of time at center camp cafe (haven't perfected my "man" latte art yet but that won't stop me) and am feeling drawn towards Gate, but haven't "registered"... is anyone actually looking at that now? I am feeling really personally worked by the theme, and am slightly excited to have a new one for next year and terrified at the same time.
Okay, I'm just gonna hit post so it's done and then go cook some food!
(Phew...)

that I had a beehive

hi CFL, welcome (from lurk mode) to ePlaya! I suspect gate already has their shifts covered, but you may want to take a few extra moments at the Greeter's Station and see if they could use a hand at some point throughout the week. Another couple fun/awesome 'walk-up volunteer' options are BRC PO (delivering packages and meeting plenty of folks along the way, seems very playa-dipidous), or Lamplighters (lighting up the city... if I can get away from my camp-related stuff and find the energy, I want to be a part of that this year).
Sounds like a great trip - safe travels, and hope to catch you out there!

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Hi and welcome,
Center Cafe needs peeps. Give them a Couple choices on shifts as I didn't get my first choice, but, hey, it's all good. Here's the info from the latest JRS newsletter...
ENTER CAMP CAFE COFFEE SHOP WANTS YOU!
The Coffee Shop in Center Camp Cafe is still accepting volunteers of all kinds! We really take Radical Inclusion to heart and, if you're willing to work with us, we'de like to find you a volunteer position for you. There's really nothing like the hustle of running through the lines, so that people don't have to wait so long and nearly every position that we have is a member of a smaller team and a member of a bigger team, too! So, you get to not just meet a few new people, but work with them and, well... That just creates a special bond. We're a unique team, because of these things and we'd really like you to join us---because what we're about, at our very core, is creating a community space, where everyone is welcome. We'd like you to feel welcome, too. Please take this opportunity to join us behind the counters.
Roles:
The counter is staffed with cashiers, experienced baristas, runners, brewers and a huge range of little things that need doing; Cashiers work it at the counter, taking orders & making change. Baristas *must* have prior experience and be able to make espressos, lattes, & cappuccinos in all their many variations on a standard machine. Runners keep things running smooth behind the counter, filling ice coolers (yes! Getting ice out of the ice truck at noon in the desert!), pouring the cold drinks (lemonade, ice chai or coffee), and keeping your barista stocked. Every role has it’s benefits and every role is crucial to the café! Do whatever you feel called to do!
Hours:
We are open 24/7 throughout the event, from 3pm Monday, August 29th, through 3pm Monday, September 5th. The coffee shop is staffed in four hour shifts that start at 7, 11, & 3 around the clock - that’s both AM and PM. So whether you’re an early riser, or a night owl, we’ve got something for you!
Contact:
We'd love to schedule you up for some shifts in our café! Please keep in mind that the late night shifts are always the hardest for us to fill, so if you're up for it please take one of those on. They're lots of fun! Watching the sunrise from behind the coffee shop counter is nothing short of bliss! (Especially the mornings after a good burn...)
So what we need from you is simply send a message stating that you want to work, to Xander, our Volunteer Scheduler at [email protected]).

Thanks Trilobyte!! (darn, wish my dad knew where those trilobytes were that I dug up in the mojave when I was a kid...) I will keep Greeters in mind, for sure. Can I summon up that much unbridled enthusiasm (wait, I do that in my day job... so yeah, maybe!)? Ah.... BRCPO, hope the General has found a ticket! I've always appreciated his (out-of-character?) hugs.
Again, thanks for the welcome. Feels nice to not be a lurker anymore.

Thanks, yurtgirl, I had just seen that in the JRS as well... and, email sent!
It took me a couple of years on playa before I got over my "but, I do that in default..." to realize "damn, I actually do that *really well* in default, and I should share that!" It was a pleasure to serve well made coffee to all sorts of folk last year. I'll be doing it again, this year, I'm sure!
(Shoot, only four work days to perfect my )'( art... !) Though really, I'd rather make a mean shot than fancy doodles. Both together... yay!

GAH! I was so sure I had clicked that little button already, and therefore wouldn't make you have to give me this advice. Well, now I guess I'm checking to see if I really did it this time.
Thanks, Savannah
