5-6 or more hours to kill in Reno...
5-6 or more hours to kill in Reno...
Once I arrive Wednesday in Reno, I have at least five hours before hotel check-in (when those who have the room arrive).
What the heck should I do all day? Airport with final destination of Peppermill hotel...
ETA:
I do not gamble, whatsoever.

Or ask the people you're rooming with to give the hotel a quick call saying you'll be there before them.
We check in people all the time who didn't officially book the room at our resort.
Unless, of course, you're not being 100% forthright about the number of ppl in your room..... in which case you could be upping the dollar amount a bit.

If you go with JK's suggestion (which of course was perfect), I'd have to add:
Before handing your stuff over, change into your craziest outfit, then saunter over to the concierge desk and ask what they suggest.
One look at you should suffice in getting sent to the perfect place.

The last time I was in Reno everybody in my group headed to the hotel cafe - well, the one at the next nearest hotel, since ours was closed.delle wrote:Before handing your stuff over, change into your craziest outfit, then saunter over to the concierge desk and ask what they suggest. Me, I asked two security guards and a homeless guy where they'd eat.
I recommend the Golden Nugget, if you're ever hungry in Reno.

WTF?!? Who goes to Reno and doesn't plan on gambling? It's not like there's anything else to do in that town.C.f.M. wrote:Once I arrive Wednesday in Reno, I have at least five hours before hotel check-in (when those who have the room arrive).

Check luggage in at front desk. Ask them if there's a park near by. Go to park, read book.

Yeah, generally that's my time killer - esp. with my new kick-ass kindle/nook/library phone but I'll have been traveling for...8 or 10 hours, at least, reading and reading and reading on planes and waiting to get on planes.Eric wrote:Check luggage in at front desk. I didn't know if any locals knew the area and a....um....I don't know. I'm guessing Reno's not much for museums or other hi-falutin' shit.

Re: 5-6 or more hours to kill in Reno...
Reno is unfortunately the most "Boring little city in the world." They simply misspelled "boring" as "biggest." There is nothing to do in Reno, at all. I was there on a Friday night and the entire city was dead, even the casino floors. They planted those casinos with the hope that something of value would spring up, but to no avail. Since you'll be there early, there will be no Ribs fest, and the Nevada State Fair has been cancelled.C.f.M. wrote:Once I arrive Wednesday in Reno, I have at least five hours before hotel check-in (when those who have the room arrive).
What would I do? I'd bring a deck of cards and hang out at some casino, cafe, or some place and play cards with friends or with yourself. Maybe you can find some place with free Wifi and watch youtube videos. Literally. There is nothing to do there. Nothing.

There's a park named after my great grandfather just down the road from the Peppermill, good quiet spot to read.Eric wrote:Check luggage in at front desk. Ask them if there's a park near by. Go to park, read book.
and, it's attached to several other parks by a trail system, IIRC.
Lots of nice walks along the Truckee through town.
There's a car museum.
I believe one of the downtown casinos has a good gun museum.
UNR has lots to do on campus.
or, you could go up and down the halls of the hotel, knocking on doors to see who answers naked.

Yeah, I remember thinking "Man, there is NOTHing here..." the first time I was there.
So I can spend money unecessarily, add more reading/movie watching to my day-long experience of it and go to a gun and/or car museum. Grrrreeeeat.
I guess I will just go to the hotel and take it from there...park related to Ygmir sounds good. Do any dirty old men come with the family name?
People-watching, sunshine, all that jazz. Gee, I don't know ANYwhere else I'll be doing that anytime soon...

I would have thought you would enjoy steampunk?
It's a special museum.
I have seen most of the collection before they sold off $200 million of it, but still worth seeing.
Not sure this is there, but as an example...

Re: 5-6 or more hours to kill in Reno...
one block west behind the peppermill is Virginia Lake Park. used by lots of dog walkers since there is a dedicated dog park area on the west side of the park.
two blocks down going north(right on s.virginia st) from the peppermill, small strip mall w/ sushi and mexican food and a 16 screen movie theater across the street - all mainstream, no indie titles.
from there, going one more block north and you're at s.virginia / plumb - cvs, savemart, ross, western wear store, ben franklins art/craft supply store, more food options - chinese, pho, sandwhiches, etc, usual strip mall mentality. no super funky stores in that immediate area
the nv museum of art is about 2 miles away (also headed north) from peppermill and costs $10 or so.

Ah! Thanks! Exactly the type of info I was looking for! Good to know there's some walking options, might get a jump on food shopping at Save Mart, thanks!
Re: 5-6 or more hours to kill in Reno...
no problem -
the save-mart is actually one block west (left) from s.virginia/plumb intersection, while the cvs/strip mall would be just to to the right. the cvs has a little food and bigger pharmacy section compared to the "normal" grocery store save mart version. if you do go to virginia lake park behind the peppermill, just keep walking (north again) till lakeside hits plumb lane and the save mart is across the street. not far at all from peppermill, about 1/2 mile tops.

Re: 5-6 or more hours to kill in Reno...
on north virginia you could check out junkee's clothing exchange, the melting pot, polyesther's playawear. maybe take a bus up that far. then you can eat at 'sup' or 'creme'. keep walking north to the river. nice cooling hangout. dip your hot feet in. what time are you getting to town?

Go to the courthouse and ask a judge how someone who killed someone in Reno, NV, would end up serving his sentence in a CA state prison.
