Rideshares galore! How do you drop them off on arrival?

Post by Fufa » Thu Aug 18, 2011 10:40 pm

So my bus full of friends turned into a not so full bus, so we've filled it with 5 rideshare people camping at 3 different camps, as well as transporting 2 bicycles we need to get to a 4th camp. The bikes will be easy, we can just ride them over and walk back. But what to do with these people and all their stuff? What is the acceptable method to get them to camp (if there is one)? They are all at least placed on the same side of the city (less than 6:00), but are more in the inner area. We doubt the ability of our bus to navigate deep into the crowded city, and we ourselves plan on camping in the outside blocks. Do we just drop them off with their stuff nearish their camp and leave them to walk the rest of the way themselves? Do we help them carry stuff to their camps? We have a lot to set up at our own camp, and are trying to figure out the balance between taking care of our own business, and not being total dicks. We are taking these people home as well at the end of the event, and it is a 30 hour ride in one direction that we would like to be enjoyable. So experienced givers of rideshares, please bestow your knowledge on me, the total noob at this.

I've been the rider when I've camped separate from the transport. Unless they are backpackers or have a wagon for hauling, it really helps to get right to their camp. But are their camps placed? Maybe find your spot and send them out by bike to locate their exact coordinates, then do one efficient run. The bus can make the street turns. That also locates them for pick up outbound. But you are being smart setting expectations ahead, and counting on worst case playa brain and high emotions outbound.

Get a map and prepare for a magical quest. It can be the most memorable episode.

Basically I'd go with what SSEye is saying- if they're placed, look at the map first & figure out how to get them there efficiently in one run. If you can figure out the camps before loading the bus with stuff, you can even pack to make it "last person in camp, first stuff in bus" to help avoid digging (that would mean your stuff is farthest in).

If they don't have placed camps, do it just like SSEye suggested, but put your stuff easiest to get out. That way you can set up your camp while they're looking for theirs.

in the past i rode with a bus that held a good 30~ people, itd drop us all off around 6oclock and ring road..

at that point youd be responsible for finding yer way to camp.. this seemed OK to me and everyone else...

radical self reliance can help you there! as mentioned it can be a magical journey..

find an art car.. find some people.. make it happen.

i would drive to your camp and let the people find their own way.. if they need to let them stage stuff with the bus and make a few trips..

Having them check in with you 12, 24 or 48 hours prior to leaving will help with their motivation to be ready to exodus and be a comfort to you as ride provider. I would ask that they be ready at a specific time in the exact location where you dropped them off or if they want to they can bring their stuff to the bus and make the pick up process easier.
Communication of expectations really helps even though anyone reasonably responsible should be trying hard to make the process go well for the ride provider.

Thanks guys! We've decided to find our spot first, drop off our campmates to begin setting up our shade structure and tents, while the driver alone goes to drop off the rideshares then come back. For sure we'll have them check in with us/drop off extra stuff the day before we leave.

If you can, bring a little red wagon(or equivalent)...

Tell them you'll drop them off at the shuttle stop.

Oh, just toss them out at the trash fence with a suitcase of water.
