5.8 in DC
Wow, Washington DC just had a quake and we could feel it all the way up here in NY. kinda rare for us East coasters.
Well what we just felt was an aftershock apparently.
Edit: The radio just said 5.8 but online news sources are reporting a pretty widely varied richter for it.

I'm on the 33rd floor in downtown Manhattan and the building shook! My first earthquake, kind excited about it actaully.
NY is like the new California, gay marriage is legal, celebrities get away with crimes (DSK), and we have earthquakes. All we gotta do now is move the playa to NJ!

Jeez... We just had an earthquake here in Richmond VA. I ran out of the house once I realized what it was - so that ol building wouldn't fall on me! Yikes. All seems ok now. Hope all is well with everyone else who got shook up!

Wow, was that from an aftershock or the original quake?MyDearFriend wrote:Yeah, well, I have a bunch of crap to pick up around here... walls, shelves, cupboards got dumped
Did anyone get hurt or is it mostly just things getting shaken up?

Re: 5.8 in DC
That is only the second time in my life I remember feeling a quake so I've never really paid much attention to them.
Looking at the US quake map for the first time is quite a shocker though - 732 in the past week including another big one on the CO / NM border recently, and a few small ones that seem very close to the playa as well.

Ohio was rocking, too! Hope nobody was hurt by this.
I was talking with another nurse in our hospital on the 4th floor and honestly just thought i was having a "moment" with the movement. Head rush or whatever then one of the social workers came out of their office and asked if we felt the same thing. Tvs on the walls were swaying, the leaves on the ficus tree were quivering. Weird!
i was in an earthquake in the 80s up in Alaska but none since. I felt all woozy and weird but just brushed it off to not enough caffeine. Whodathunkit here in Ohio?

I was on the phone with a lady in Connecticut and she starts screaming "We're having an earthquake! I've got to get out of here!" and hangs up. CT is a long ways from DC isn't it?

Re: Earthquake anyone?
When you NEVER have earthquakes, a little seems like a lot...
Giggling about all my friends out there who "would never move to California because of the earthquakes"...
Ready for the bizaarre first thought? When we got the USGS Flash (we're on their network) I was thinking... hmmm... Hell of a bomb went off somewhere. I mean... NOTHING hapens out there.
(Now, see, those driving out from the East Coast - this was your alarm going off that you should be leaving!)

Mod note: I merged the two threads. The conversations are now shook up and disjointed.
Buwahahaa... CHAOS!
I used to live in Japan, yeah been in enough, more earthquakes than I can count. Looked around my house here in Utah and decided I was screwed when we get ours. I live less than a mile from a big sleepy fault.

There are a lot more buildings on the East Coast that are brick construction, more than on the west coast anyway. Hope there's not too much damage there.

Re: Earthquake anyone?
6.0 is a good shaker! I lived in CA all my life before moving up here to WA state. About 7 years ago there was a 3.2 here and there was mass hysteria (well, I exaggerated some). But there was damage, like chimneys collapsing. I was at work and felt nauseous and dizzy, when I realized we just had a small earth quake.
The first one I really remember was in 1972 I think. I live in a small town in SoCal called La Verne. I shook about 6 or 7 am I think. My poor mom was running around checking on everyone and catching things that could fall off the walls. I was just laying in my bed scared. It was a 6.0 or something like that and we STILL had to go to school.
I think the worst quake "season" was between 1987-1995. We has so many earth quakes. I lived in Costa Mesa at that time and we had a few centered not to far from where I lived. The San Andreas Fault runs through that area and far up as San Fran I believe. I think the Northridge quake in the early 1990's was pretty bad.
Even though there were lots of quakes, I've never gotten used to them. They're unpredictable. I feel for you people who've never been through one. It's a weird feeling.

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

I'm Northern California, so I don't remember the event itself. I do remember Newsroom doing a little visual presentation of the fault with wooden blocks, possible with a spring involved. So remember kids, even before computer animation we had cool learning and communication tools. I think that was called San Clemente, so I've long associated it with Nixon...maryanimal wrote:The first one I really remember was in 1972 I think. I live in a small town in SoCal called La Verne.
