Thanks kitkat! I decided to buck up tonight and try to fix the one dead strand. Taking a razor blade to my creation was certainly harrowing!

Here is the culmination of a lot of hours of designing, soldering, hot glueing and working on a controller. Here is my Burning Man Evening Jacket.

Thank you so much for the compliments. I am relieved in a major way that it is finally finished and ready for packing.

Wax, I worked with a friend who is an electrical engineer on this project. A few months ago, I gave him the parameters of the lighting effects and pricing (as little as possible). We talked about using an Arduino controller, but he said that he was sure that he could design what I wanted without having to use one of those. He designed and created the controller using potentiometers, voltage regulators, resistors and a small breadboard. The lights will run for 6-7 hours on one 9 volt radio battery!

The jacket has 435 LEDs. The Man is straight white lights with each of the strands of flames colored separately.

I will also be sporting another project with the jacket that I call "The Crown Of Creation." It is a headpiece with 35 LEDs hotglued to the ends of floral wires attached to a support from a hard hat and exploding out of the top of my head. That will be powered with a 3 volt rechargeable battery from an old cell phone. Trial runs have shown that the battery will power those lights for at least 11 hours before needing to be recharged.

Come give me a hug on the playa if you spot the jacket or my head exploding!

See you at home!

Oh how I envy only having to carry around a 9v battery to light my clothing project! I'm sitting now doing the wiring for the fanny pack that houses 12 AA batteries plus the MOSFET controller board. I'm gonna be a jumble of wires, there's no way around that. But.. I guess that's the price you pay for looking like the Vegas strip with 1440 LEDs all over you?

I have a sewing machine but it was acting really strange the last time I used it. It's a vintage one, a Dressmaker I think? Last time I used it, it was going really slow...I don't know how to explain it other than the fact that it just wasn't moving as quick as a sewing machine should. It hadn't always been that way, either, it just started slowing down one day. I don't know if it is something with the pedal or what.. I don't know much about the parts. eek does anyone have any insight?

the way I have this worded, one could think my artcar is a sewing machine...and that is not the case.. ha

This was posted after I departed for the burn, but better late than never I guess. I'm no expert, but the basic things to try would be:

First thing is to do a thorough cleaning and oiling - gunked up parts can cause machines to slow down and unlubricated parts can cause permanent damage.

Loose belts can cause what you describe. If the machine has any belts check them for wear and or slippage. Replace or adjust the tension if necessary

Examine the foot pedal to see if the variable resistor / switch is loose. If so then open it up and tighten it to the housing.

If you are not familiar with the insides of the machine you may be able to find a manual for it online - just google manual along with the make and model number.

I posted pics of most of my projects before the burn and wore them to the meet & greet. My current avatar has one of the neck coolers I made.

The glow in the dark flag, tees, and bandannas were nice but failed to glow on the playa - likely due to the dust.

Getting a shop to do your sewing machine is perfectly alright. Older models are better--metal innards, plus, if they were around for any apprciable amount of time, you can probably find parts.

Looks like EL-tape, but very wide and very bright. If the EL-tape looks that good, I'm buying some. Please tell!

I know you left before I left so you didn't see me put it on at the MnG!! (CFM felt like it should have been announced to everyone when she saw me put it on :D )

Indeed it is EL-tape. Bought it at illuminousfilm.com, uses a pretty large amount of batteries (8) but lasted most of the night. My boyfriend made all the connections and wiring so that it is 3 pieces connected to the same power source.
Then I glued velcro to the back of the el-tape and sewed the corresponding velcro pieces to the robe where it needed them.

I was pretty glad when it was done but the playa beat it up and the glue came undone on some of the el-tape. SO I threw away the robe and will probably be remaking the entire thing and regluing the velcro to the EL-tape with e600 instead of Gorilla glue.

Unless one of you folks has any recommendations =)

It's not that wide (got the 1'') and yes it is very bright. I also got an adjustable power source so I can dim it if needed.
