Get specific.
Re: Where can one buy a beautiful headdress in SF?
I'm guessing you missed the title of the thread. I'm looking for a headdress. Something nice that would be BM appropriate.

Ben- saying you're looking for a "headdress" is as vague as saying that you're girlfriend likes "colors, what do we suggest?".
Are you looking for tribal, a rhinestone crown, a hipster fake native-American thing, a dew rag, something that looks art deco or like an Indonesian dancer...
If you're not sure what style you want, other than "headdress", I'd suggest hitting Haight St, then the Mission (esp Mission & Valencia between about 16th & 20th) or Chinatown. Sometimes you can even find cool stuff in Japantown.

i disagree. as far as i know, there is no such thing as a headdress store, so any place that would carry headdresses would not have a huge selection. i'm looking for the name of a store that might have one or two, and if i'm really lucky, three to choose from. it doesn't matter what kind of headdresses they have. i'd be happy to just find one headdress. i've been up and down haight and valencia, and found nothing.
where's the playa spirit on this forum? i'm shocked to find such an unhelpful attitude...

Eric
If you haven't had a rant in the paper about people on eplaya using "where's the playa spirit" to abuse people, I'm sure I don't know why.
Ben
You give us some particulars, we might be able to come up with some ideas. But the sheer vagueness is like trying to climb up a sheet of glass--there's nothing to hang on to.
There's an Old Navy at fourth and market. And then there's the Mario Andretti gas station on mission and something.

old navy? now you're just being mean. i guarantee you old navy doesn't carry headdresses.
maybe some of you are confused about what a headdress is, but they are fairly rare, usually handmade items that are not carried in any old clothing boutique. there can't be more than a handful of places in SF that have them. don't act like i can pick one up at any corner liquor store. it's not a vague question, and even if it was, you all could be a lot nicer about it. are you this rude in everyday life, or only on the internet? you know, i'll bet that if i met any of you on the playa, and asked you this question personally, you'd happily rattle off a short list of possibilities, with a smile. maybe costumes on haight. how about that one hat store on valencia. maybe paxton gate, as a long shot. but since you're on the internet, you have to fire off some snarky reply to belittle some person you know nothing about but probably perceive as a noob, and in the process try to make yourself seem better than them. it's the same on nearly every internet forum. i guess i was a fool for expecting eplaya to be any different. ask yourself if you behave differently in the internet than in real life, and be honest with yourself...

Ben- we're not trying to be mean, it's just that headdress means "thing that goes on your head & isn't a hat". Your description is a specific type, it's not the description of the word. Trust me, I'm a drag queen & hang out with drag queens- there isn't a specific meaning.Ben74 wrote:but they are fairly rare, usually handmade items that are not carried in any old clothing boutique. there can't be more than a handful of places in SF that have them.
The description you quoted above is much better at giving me an idea of what you may be looking for: something more tribal. I would definitely try Haight St, but I don't know a specific store. Looking for something handmade 3 days before the Gate opens is going to be tricky.

When you said "headress" my first thought was something with a lot of feathers.
I'm I supposed to google headress to see what you're talking about?
You were just asked to be more specific.

The point was, that you weren't giving me anything to work with so I gave you nothing in return.Ben74 wrote:old navy? now you're just being mean. i guarantee you old navy doesn't carry headdresses.
And I know what a headdress is. I read a lot. It's not as good as hanging out with drag queens, but it give you some ideas. Plus, I enjoy a museum now and then. I"ve seen a good few.
Now if it weren't so late in the year--with everyone rushing to get ready for the playa--and if you hadn't insulted Eric, you could have commissioned him to make you one.

I wonder if the gift shop at the craft museum or the museum of the african diaspora would serve...
I've seen some amazing stuff in the opera shop. I don't know how to shop there when there's no opera going on...
Maybe if you called them up and begged, I mean begged...

With the hundreds of Halloween shops already open, I'm sure you can cobble something together. Might have to go out of town to find matching iguanas, tho.
