If you have friends showing up late, and they want to meet you somewhere, The Man is not a good somewhere to choose.

Alcohol hits you a lot harder when it's 100 friggin degrees out.

Get a camel-bak. Seriously. I can't imagine going to BM without one now.

If you like your bike a lot, lock it!

Burt's Beeswax is the only lip balm worth using. Everything else just makes your lips shiny.

"FEATHERS = MOOP" means all types of feathers, not just boas.

Luckily I realized my folly of bringing peacock feathers as camp decoration before I took them out of my car, but in an amazing display of the power of karma, I ended up picking up 50 or so stray peacock-feather-strand moop all over the city during the rest of the week.

Silly me!

Build and proof your shade structure beforehand cuz if it fails while you're out there, you're going to suffer.

Corollary: if you're going to build someone else's idea, make darn sure you know what you are doing.

The cheap indoor outdoor green astroturf like carpet at Home depot seems like the perfect playa cover, and it is till you lift it up to pack home and discover hundreds of little plastic green threads in the mud.

Put an old sheet down under it, or something else porous but sturdy.

When you're in the middle of a 2200 mile drive, and decide to get something out of the trailer at a gas stop, be REAL sure you remember to re-attach the trailer gate......no matter how punchy you are.

ps. we got VERY lucky in that, when we realized what we'd done a few miles down the road, the padlocks and keys were STILL on the trailer roof where we'd left them......And when we got back to the little town, some kind soul had put the trailer back-board over to the side of the building after it had already been run over once....AND nothing fell out of the trailer, despite it being packed to the gills.

Don't go out to the naked photo shoot naked and without your goggles & dust mask and your GPS/compass even if it is a beautiful day at 7:30 in the morning, cause the shoot is way out at around 11:30 and the fence, and the wind could come up after the shoot and create a 2 hour whiteout that you have to sit through and get dustblasted by until it gets clear enough to find your half-frozen dust abraded private parts way home.

This happened to a burner I know last year......<g>

I discovered that catharsis has no interest for me, that just day to day moment to moment living is really more interesting than prescribed and controlled festival.

and finally, I discover yet again, that there are as many experiences of an event as there are experiencers.
I hear that! Your statement reminds me of travel. If I forget about the day to day, I have nothing while aimlessly wandering the planet, in San Francisco, Bombay, Bangkok, Porto or Black Rock. This shit is all the same.

What I've learned: FUCK EXPECTATIONS

ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN, REALLY.

Dont try to make something happen.

We took a friend out for his 1st time on the playa, he
just had to get on one of the art busses and spent a whole
night chasing it all over the playa, he never caught the bus.

We gave up after the 1st missed opportunity and went back to
the mode if 'if it was meant to happen, it will' and had a whole
lot of fun doing other things and somehow late iinto the night
we hooked up with an Art Car from Houston and had a great
tour of the playa and made some new friends that came
to our local burn so we got to see them again.

I learned that if you're bringing a funsaver, you should write your name on it. At least ten other people in your camp will have the exact same camera, and you may wind up going home with a bunch of BM photos from someone else's experiences. Interesting and all, but you'll pine for the photos you took.

Oh, and just because something sounds like a good idea when you're drunk, that doesn't actually make it a good idea.

Good point about the camera-- I wouldn't have thought of that!

As for part 2: You mean like using the bushes in front of a private college as a urnal on a brightly lit street without checking to see if a police car is cruising that same street...? (To this day I don't know if he didn't notice or just didn't care!)

Then there was the other Brian in the group who tried to pick up a woman at the private college's end of year party we crashed, while her boyfriend was standing right next to her. (Luckily there were three or four of us, so the guy kept his cool.)

Of course, then there was one of the other guys I was with (who spelled his name Bryan), who used the front steps of the same school for a dump, and put the handkerchief he used in lieu of toilet paper in the pocket of his leather jacket because he didn't know if "they can take figerprints from it" or not.

That was an interesting night, and probably a clue as to why I never finished college!

What?! This is supposed to be about BURNING MAN?!
