My point is that historically, as in every year I can think of since the website has been up, they announce the theme literally minutes after the man burn. This year they did not. I read somewhere, I think in the Burning Blog, that Larry Harvey considers the theme, and the essay that he writes on the theme, as his major artistic contribution to the event. Could it be that he's stepping down? Could be. I mean these are just questions I think are perfectly valid to be brought up in light of all the other changes this year (ticket sales capped, move from LLC to non-profit, etc.). It cracks me up how much faith some of you have in the people running the show, and how touchy some get when things get questioned. I'm fine with change, but I'm also fine with discussing the possibility of change. I'm also genuinely surprised I haven't seen others wondering the same thing.
OK, could be I'm just tired after another great burn. Still, I sense changes are afoot. As always...
Re: Doesn't the new theme get posted right after the Man bur
I guess .....if it does not happen to your time scale.... something is wrong.... Larry is fudging "his job" ... great way to start a new rumour. Rumours abound...as they always do. once again... breath deep. {exodus is running 4 to 6 hours to the pavement} sorry to disappoint YOUR schedule.
[I really would like to know the new "theme" myself..... really not critical until at least January]
but see the problem as you wish....

Re: Doesn't the new theme get posted right after the Man bur
AFAIK, 2006 was the year they (hypothetically) started announcing the theme for next year right after the Burn. (In 2006 they announced they would be announcing it right after the Burn, but some problem delayed the announcement that year.) Anyway, Larry might still be on playa-time, so I wouldn't worry.

Actually the announcing of the theme right after the man burns is a recent thing.
For most of Burning Man, the theme wasn't announced until the late fall, or maybe a few weeks prior to tickets going on sale in January. While it is a little odd that no theme has been announced because of the past few years, its not anything to be concerned about.

I remember it being announced the Tuesday or Weds after the burn, but yeah, that was 2005, 2006ish.
I see the section under "burning blog" on the home page is now blank...

The word on the streets says it will be The Default World. But I have before and certainly I will be wrong again.

When did Martini Steve do the Shrine to the Oven Mitt? He met Larry Harvey at the installation and Harvey told him the next year's theme. That was the first time I remember it coming out that early. It was American Dream theme and the announced theme was Evolution. That should date it fairly well.Ugly Dougly wrote:That's how I remember it as well.Patamon wrote:Actually the announcing of the theme right after the man burns is a recent thing.

Yes. I met Larry at my art piece in 2008 and he told me the up coming theme. But I was sworn to secrecy. I came up with some strange theme to tell people.

I have heard it said that Rod Garrett, the BRC city planner, was one of the people heavily involved with the decision making process for the theme for the last few years. Rod passed shortly before the Burn this year. I would think that this probably may well have something to do with the lack of a theme announcement for 2012. I might be comlpletely wrong, but it does make sense...

"It's the end of the world as we know it" seems reasonably appropriate.

Re: Doesn't the new theme get posted right after the Man bur
First of all, They have the date tickets go on sale for the 2012 burn on the website so I am sure there will be a burn in 2012. Although that will probably be the last burn.
The theme for 2012 should be, simply, 2012. Afterall, those 4 digits encompass any possible theme that would be fitting... End of the World, New Beginnings, Rebirth, Apocalypse... 2012 should have no theme, cause it is the end of the world as we know it.

I'm kind of hoping for the theme to be "Winter Wonderland."

I can't wait to find out next year's theme either. But I believe 2006 was the first year that the theme was posted on burn night. Prior to that, you had to wait until tickets went on sale (or shortly before).

Re: Doesn't the new theme get posted right after the Man bur
I specifically remember that both Beyond Belief (2003) and Vault of Heaven (2004) weren't announced until very early January a few weeks before tickets went on sale for those years. I missed 2005 and 2006 but I vaguely remember The Green Man (2007) being announced earlier in the fall, possibly very close to after the Burn in 2006.
