So curious what some of the highlights were of years past. I'll start.
One time.. at Burning Man back in 97 me and the group were walking around when we came up to what looked like a construction site. there was a sander lying on a barrel next to a buch of different metal pieces hanging from a pipe. My friend Ross picks up the sander and starts shooting sparks off of the barrel. I was thinking "Uh.. I'm not sure you are supposed to be doing that!" Ross kept going, shooting cool sparks everywhere. When he put it down my friend Erik Picked it up and started shooting 6 foot roster tails and fire balls all over the place. Friggin cool. When he stopped and we looked around there was about 200 people watching and cheering. I think they thought Erik and Ross were part of some show. We put the sander down and moved on.

that site was great!
we called it "busy camp" after watching it for about an hour.
super hilarious and sadistic.
i remember the crazy roller-coaster-machine-thing- that the "Seemen" (sp) built a couple years back. if you fell off of it backwards, a nice net of rusty barbed wire was there to catch you.
when a girl came up and got on it, she asked: "do you have any advice"?
the ride operator responded with:
"i wouldn't reccommend it".
hilarious.

2002: a fine musical trifecta
After the Burn in '02, we were walking around between the Man and the Esplanade when the FunkMobile (I think that's what it was......a full flat-bed 18-wheeler with a band on it). pulled up and parked right next to us. A glorious drunken funk groove was been perpetrated, and we danced in front of the truck. Not long after, the bass player got irate at the drunkeness on stage and bolted, then the guitar player keeled over. Something possessed me, and I jumped up and ended up playing guitar with the drummer and keyboard player for about an hour (my sense of time may have been distorted, though). Soon, two 6'5" LA drag queens in platinum wigs and white "Bootsy" outfits jumped up and started the grind. It seemed like the crowd was in the thousands (though, again, my perception may have been a little "off".....). What a trip.
When I jumped down from there, Sunburn Sarah, Matt and I walked down the Esplanade and immediately heard drumming from under a large tent. We went in, and a full band was jamming and a guy was laying down some excellent Santana-style leads. Best of all......about 15 conga drums were just sitting there unplayed! The three of us went in and jammed on congas for about 2 hours, turning around at the end and seeing a huge crowd behind us where no one had been when we started. We had to stop when our hands started swelling up (much in need of some kind of hand-held 12 oz. cooling device....).
We walked out of there around 4am and went over to Hair of the Dog. Despite them being brutalized by being too close to the rave camps, a brave combo (but not Brave Combo) were on stage laying down a diseased sound.....several guys too drunk to play were wonking, and a guy in full Bozo clown suit was putting out a sporadic rant punctuated by a clown horn and swigs from the big jug of Gilbey's Gin he had in the other hand. We called him "Cranky the Desultory Clown". When the guitar player keeled over (a theme for the night, I guess), I got to play along with one weird circus show. Great fun.
Then the sun came up and I had to scramble back to my coffin. As a musician, I couldn't have asked for a better end to my favorite Burn year (so far, anyway).

That reminds me
One time.. at Burning Man last year. I was at the 11:00 end it was about noon and I hear this really cool music, I stop my friends to listen. There was this girl singer and this black guy singer with dreads. They were playing off of each other in a real cool funky, soul filled groove. Very original. I'm thinking, when they are done I have to ask if they have a CD I can buy (Off playa of course) When they finish the Girl goes to the Black guy "So what's your name?"
That's BM for you.
