Re: Indian Tacos
I think it was Lillys... I think they were off Corral road on the rght heading south. Thy do amazing frybread, and everything they use is fresh stuff, even real ground beef (not canned chili), and the salsa is spectacular! Also... there was space to pull off to the side of the road with the trailer. Had 2 - gained 2 pounds... but worth it!
I noticed that Station 29 was *really* busy, what was scary was people swerving off the road to catch them... really dangerous maneuvers with a line of 50 MPH traffic behind you!!! And the place on the left with the bag dropoff was PACKED - I couldnt have gotten in there if I tried!
My only regret - coming in early, I've yet to find a Taco joint open.

Lack of fresh, burner plowed jackrabbit carcasses may or may not have something to do with that.Bay Bridge Sue wrote: My only regret - coming in early, I've yet to find a Taco joint open.

And now they have a facebook, Oasis 29. I totally forgot the name tell you brought it up!
And it is hella dangerous! If you try and jam on the breaks to get off the road somebody could smash right into your rear end, and if you get off going 40-50 you could very easily run someone over! Especially since people figure they're off playa they can skip the lights.
BBSue, next year, just bring your own fresh kamikaze rabbit, and ask someone for some fry bread!

I work at a NA Casino in Michigan - they have frybread on the menu at the cafe, but one of the tribal members intruced me to the "other menu" and the absolute pleasure of the "FryBread BLT".. That is heaven!

We're having BLTs tonight for dinner with some of the Bacon we have left over!

We stopped at the stand in Nixon in the community center parking lot. Yummy! Their fry bread was awesome & the family very nice. They commented on how "clean" we were.
I only regret not ordering the tri tip sandwich. It was served on fry bread with a fried anaheim chili pepper & veggies.

When we were heading out on Sunday, we discussed stopping, but one member thought that it would result in untreatable indigestion in a vehicle for many hours...so we kept going. Wish we had stopped now, guess we will do it next year.
One funny note, we passed a sign on the way out that I thought read "NAN Taco." Nan is a popular frybread from India (Indian=Indian, right?) I thought that this made perfect sense! Several miles on down the road, I saw a similar sign with better handwriting. It read "NDN Tacos" and that made much better sense than what I had been rolling around in my fevered brain.

Re: Indian Tacos
Isn't it kinda odd what you think about when your kinda tired and just driving. Driving forever.... and ever.... and ever.
Ya know that part of the drive, about 6-8 hours in, everyone else has fallen asleep, and its just you.... Driving.... listening to some sort of music off someones Ipod.... and still driving... and then you stop for a second and assess what it is that your thinking about "What the fuck am I thinking.... And how did I get here"
Then you have to question, "am I delirious.... Should I be driving right now.?.."
In the end you decide your fine and awake.... just really really really bored.
Then it turns to math... "If I'm traveling down I-80 at 72.5 mph at 22:32 hours, through the Salt Flats, I should be crossing Salt Lake in 3.2 hours, making it 01:44, at which point my speed will slow for traffic to 68.5 hours, I will travel at this speed for approximately 14-15 minutes.............. (until 30 minutes later you determine) if the last traffic signal before your neighbor hood is green, you should be arriving home at 13:06 hours."

Just kidding, I'm stuck at work behind my desk.
You really never sit there and figure out when you should be home? Or what time you'll cross through what city/town and will there be traffic? Or will the _______ (store, restaurant, or attraction) still be open?

Re: Indian Tacos
Resurrecting this thread because, damn it, it's necessary! Indian Tacos are da bomb. I read about Oasis 29 (AKA Station 29). Is that at (or near) mile post 29 which, if memory serves, is north of Nixon? And have any of you that may already be in Gerlach know if the Indian taco stands are up and running? I've always preferred the mom-and-pop stands with the simple trailer and picnic table set up. The ones at the high school in Nixon are OK, but they have a mass-produced feel about them unlike their truly homemade counterparts. So I guess what I'm asking is, around noonish on Saturday where would be my best bet to get a great NDN taco?
Re: Indian Tacos
The one closest to the playa in the trailer.
Re: Indian Tacos
Does anyone know if it's ok for me to put up a booth in Gerlach at the gas station or next to it, for UV Active clothing line from Bali?

I'll be the semi-wet blanket. I had a taco last year after the burn (beef, I think). I recall it being decent, but nothing amazing (put a good amount of tobasco on it to get some more flavor). I do like supporting the locals, though, and I'm hoping to prove my taste buds from last year wrong by trying another one on the way out this year!
Besides, I just love the concept of an "Indian Taco". Hah.

We must have stopped at the same place. After hearing so many good things about the tacos, we had to stop. Sadly ours were tough and flavorless. Not giving up though- we will try again this year.MacGlenver wrote:I had a taco last year after the burn (beef, I think). Has everyone in this thread eaten an indian taco but not eaten a Chalupa from Taco Bell? Because it looks and sounds like the exact same thing.
Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong...deliciously.

The Indian Taco is a little too small to get laid in, but you get laid the minute you get out?

I come down from the Northwest, and there aren't any taco stands to be had. I love Indian tacos...
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.
