Indian Taco...fact or fiction?

So, I kept hearing about these mysterious Indian tacos. What exactly are they?

It's a taco made with fry bread.

If you get some bread dough and roll it thin, then deep fry it, thats fry bread.

They're fact. Ask Uncle Google. They're good if you make 'em at home, but downright epic and magical if you get them from one of the roadside stands on the way home from the playa.

So what makes them more magikal coming /going from the playa than making them at home?

buying them from the indians that make them make it more magical, because you're also helping their economy and lessening the negative impact of traveling through the land dumping garbage.

I think it goes beyond the economics (we take our trash out with us), it's hard to really put into words...it's just better. Though our next Indian Taco night may be hard to beat - we're going to get all fancy with some of the goodies we bring back from the Farmer's Market on Saturday and take the gourmet approach.

Growing up in Wyoming, we called them "Navajo Taco's" The PC term "fry bread" was called "squaw bread." It is a sweet bread which is also great with honey butter. But with beans, meat and a few of the typical garnishes, it kicks the sterotypical taco's ass.

I make it a priority to frequent one of the indian taco stands on my way out - would do it pre-event but they're not open. I enjoy the families' company and giving them money. It's a joy to give back to their community. They have a good thing going on with $5 per bag garbage pickup and rinsing off your car. We only got the two veggi taco's, but it was wonderful to sit with the ladies there.

Maryanimal, since you're in Washington and head north prior to Gerlach, as far as I know you miss all the Indian taco stands. Worth your while to drive, oh I don't know, say 30 minutes out of your way, to try one. We get them coming and going. Oddly, the IT at the Nixon school were better than the ones we had coming in at a mom-and-pop, but that's usually not the case.

A little off-topic, but If you are arriving to Pyramid Lake Saturday before the burn and NOT entering early, staying there only costs $9 for a permit to stay on the lakeside at the Paiute gas station. It's quiet, serene, beautiful, barely populated at all, and entirely restful before the chaos of getting in line. Indian Tacos are sold at about 3 or 4 locations from the Pyramid Lake road to Empire, and easily within a 10 minute drive from the Western lakeside. It's especially awesome for RV drivers since you can have shade, take swims, fish, or get your Zen on. Traffic passing you buy on the road all night are big trucks pulling flatbeds loaded with huge art cars. Kind of gets you in the mood - a mix of a peaceful place and seeing transient burners in small caravans whizzing by.

Thank you Solito! Sounds like a beautiful place. I'll have to Google it when I get to my computer later. How late are they open for the most part and if they have names for their stands, which one would you recommend?

Yea the Paiute folks are great, and really deserve the business burners offer. I used to live in Suapi AZ with the Havasupai, and while I was enjoying my pre-burn taco, I got to gossip with the Paiute ladies about several of the families I know down in that canyon. This burner loves native gossip!! Anyway the stands are very informal family deals for the most part, with a kitchen running in a small trailer or on a table. They all serve comparable goods I'd imagine. Always get it with the spicy home-made salsa on top. ;D

PS - Don't tell all your friends about the Lake - I don't wanna show up next year to rest and find 2000 burners lining the shores!

No worries Solito. Not a word outta me about the serene lake. I plan on getting an EA pass for next year. I love watching the playa develop over the days. I'm thinking about making the tacos at lunchtime to feed people! I just have to perfect the best tasting frybread!

Start with a cylinder of bisket dough for a first try, it will give you the basic idea.

We made Indian Tacos in our camp on Tues. That's our thing to do(it is Tues....) They are soooo good!! Something about being away from
home and still cooking as if you were, has it's appeal.
