and now I'm ashamed... To be a little fair though I did leave early. Next year I promise to stay longer (because all of you are amazing) and help clean up (because that's what friends do). Ok, you have it in writing. If I fail to live up to my promise you can poke me in the eye
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Being that the event was totally overwhelmed by strangers, there's no way I would have stayed around to help clean up.

On the other hand, if our camp hosted the M&G, cleanup and trash disposal would be a service we would provide, as should any good host.

I passed by your camp once but it looked like an event was going on and we were on our way to visit my bf's sister. If there is a bulletin there for eplayans I would come in and sign up/research it :D

I think that main culprit.. at least 80% of this.. is because the event was listed publicly in the WWW. All of this could have been avoided had it not been listed I feel like.

If we want to go a step farther.. (go ahead, let the rock throwing start now) ..we could simply put up a few "private event" signs.

Yup, I agree completely. That and set up the name tag table at the main entry point. If they don't have a name tag, or are mystified when they are asked about eplaya (believe me, I asked a few and it wasn't difficult to tell if they were eplayans or not) they can be politely informed it is a private event and asked to come back tomorrow to enjoy a glass of wine when the bistro would again be open to the general population. It certainly wouldn't be the only private event ever hosted at Burning Man.

I think overall this would pretty much equal problem solved. Forget roping off food lines or whatever.

- Don't list in WWW

- Put up "Private Event" signs

- Have the name tag station at the entrance with someone hanging out. If they don't have a tag, ask what their Eplaya name is. If they give you one and act like they know what's up, make them a quick tag with a sharpie. If they look bewildered, nicely reply that it's a private event for one night only.

If they want to lie and make something up, whatever. But.. these 3 simple steps I think would keep out 98% of the rif raf.

I agree.

Except I wouldn't call them riffraff--just misinformed. Most people will get the idea of "private event" once told nicely and invited back tomorrow or later that night for a glass of wine.

I think I could even make duplicate name tags to place in front of each dish put on the buffet table--then you'd know who to compliment for a dish you especially liked.

The nametags were awesome - thank you! I wish I had better eyes and could read other ppl's names easily, but the avatar pics made it easy to connect familiar 'faces' with real faces.

I also agree with the suggestion to reconsider listing the event in the WWW guide. Posting it there essentially makes it a public event. I'll also suggest maybe making it a bit earlier in the week if that would work. Thursday is when there tends to be an influx of the RSE (radically self entitled), plus it was also CORE burn night (I would have loved to stay longer, but I had to take off to try and catch that). Given the success of the regional effigies, I'm sure they'll do it again next year (bigger and better, of course).

Thanks, your very welcome. It was my pleasure making them. The larger Avatars will look even better next year!
I did them as straight screen captures to try and make them look as close as they could to how they looked here, but if I have the time next year, maybe I'll try to enlarge the names to make them easier to read...or use that area I made white for people to write in their real or playa name...I don't think too many people used that area. We'll see. Suggestions always welcome, now that it won't be a surprise for next year.

Doc, my wife and I would have been happy to help clean up and cart off as much moop as we could carry on our bikes (as you requested pre event). We even stayed past well 10:00 intending to do so, but since no one seemed inclined to start cleaning and we were exhausted we departed around 10:30 or so.

And before anyone comes up with anything snarky like "you could have taken it upon yourselves to start cleaning", I just want to say that being kinda shy and a noob I was uncomfortable with the idea of starting to clean someone elses camp, the same way I wouldn't walk into someones defaultia home and begin cleaning it.

I think a bulletin board would be brilliant. I left all my notes at home and kept pestering mydearfriend for where you guys were. Normally I am pretty organized, planning, thinking kind of person but I just blew up out there

Yeah, the serious cleaning didn't start till about 11:00, but just keep in mind next year Our Camp is Your Camp :D . Ken and I took a quick run out to see the last of the effigy burn, then came back and got busy helping mydearfriend. I flip flop on the open/closed aspect of the party. Both ideas have good merits, but I do wish that more of you could have had some of jkisha's dish. I "line jumped" by going around to the back of the table and acting like I was going to serve and snagged some for Ken and I and then almost went back and just took the bowl to my trailer (ken wouldn't let me, something about selfishness and sharing).

There were paper plates/forks etc at some point, they showed up and disappeared pretty quick. lol, as did anything put on the table. It was seriously crazy for a while there, i was nervous to stick my hand out across the table lest some crazy hippie try and eat it. :D
I thought by the time we went to bed the camp looked pretty decent.

I actually brought some pretty paper plates and cocktail napkins with me to donate, but there was nothing but mostly empty bags of chips on the table when I got there. :D

I'm happy to help out with set-up. I'm usually working at midnight, so probably wouldn't have time to help with clean up and still make my shift. =/

Bringing paper plates and plastic silverware is a total NOOB move. Our first year we brought paper plates and plastic silverware and we had TWELVE or more bags of trash to strap onto the roof of our car. This year... We had one single bag full of trash, a lot of it was from neighbors during our potlucks. It just makes sense to bring your own stuff to a potluck, if you don't then suffer with having to eat with your hands.... simple as that. I'm not asking anyone to shit into each others mouths. I bet it would bring the trash down at least ten fold. Then next on the list is we need a designated "can smasher" to walk around smashing empty cans, drinking the lone soldiers, and putting them in a trash bag. I would gladly take this role as my help for cleaning next year.
