Idea? Burning Man Quilt

Post by tattoogoddess » Mon Sep 19, 2011 1:02 pm

So I was thinking for something that people could do that is easy and free.

I want to take a bunch of white quilting squares and fabric markers. With new people I meet give them a square to draw on and decorate how ever they wish. This would give me a amazing memory of the people I will have met out on the playa by having a burning man quilt at the end of the week.

Yay or nay? Any imput?

If you quilt it, they will come.

Do it!

Sounds like fun. Even if you only go so far as to do it with the camps in your neighborhood, that seems like an awesome idea.

finding stuff in that thread is difficult, as best. Which is why I made a special thread, to keep track of the good stuff...
It used to have a handy list of links that led to the never ending blanket, but I must disappear and rage at the cruel universe for erasing the links in the update.

(time passes)

Okay, I'm back. The never ending blanket is a blanket that is in the Bar threads (Bar Thread and Da Bar Part 3) where tired eplayans can snuggle and nap when they need that. It is a greatly loved piece of bar equipment.

Ok so this is a metaphorical blanket from what I gather?

But if I keep returning to BM it would be a never ending blanket!! Lol. Would be fun to bring back every year and use with good friends on cold playa nights!

I'm not sure that "metaphorical" is the correct term, but yes, this is an imagined item that exists in our joint world. Any time you want to go into the bar and get a drink (hey, it's all top shelf, if you're going to dream, dream big) you are welcome to. We have coffee in the mornings, Misa usually serves breakfast and on the weekend ygmir shows cartoons, so it's not just booze. It's booze, coffee, breakfast, cartoons and comradery.

We started one, but it got lost.
And the next incarnation of the bar will be under new management, so who knows what delights it will encompass.

Okay, I'm not trying to string you along, but the bar thread(s) are where a lot of connecting with other eplayans happens. So it's hard to say that it all just exists in our minds, because it also exists in our hearts.

Does that help?

You need funding for a few yards of fabric?

No it is 150 yard of fabric. Enough for around 3000 people. As well as fabric markers, thread, backing paper, printer paper and transport costs to and from. I did not figure in cotton backing for it though.
It breaks down to about $1000. Fabric is roughly $3 a yard just to let you know.

You can also use some great photographs and use transfer paper and iron that picture onto fabric as well to make the quilt really interesting and customize it for 2012. The entry sign, the Man, the Temple and some noteworthy art are musts for a commemorative quilt.

Holy sheezus! I stand corrected. I know fabric is about $3 a yard.. hence my original observation. But a 3000 person quilt.. damn.

Just curious.. but who/how many people are going to sew this thing? How are you going to transport it? What are you going to do with it when it's done?

The AIDS quilt probably has some lessons on logistics worth copying.

in 2013 the quilt will be on display on the playa as a art installation.
I will be driving with someone and bringing it with in the trailer.
And my moher, sisters and I will be sewing it :) I was taught to quilt by A Amish sewing group growing up. I spent 3 summers on a Amish farm while my mother was at work.

fabric doesn't have to be $3/yd - go through thrift stores, and you can find it for $1 or less. The best quilt I've owned in snow country was made from double knit polyester. the front was 8" squares and the back was 11" squares. it had double batting. Nice!

I realize that this could become a logistics conundrum, so break it down to exactly what you CAN start with and manage, that way it doesn't get on top of you. For instance, the first year is the top, of double bed size. The next year add another section to make it king size. Or something of that nature. Keep the squares uniform is my advice, so it's not as difficult to piece. the aids quilt has too large of squares imo, but I understand why they went in that direction.

Good luck!

Thats sounds really interesting!
Though, I think I missed a bunch of details somewhere. Is there a link with a detailed project explanation ( or am I'm being retarded on a Monday Morning?)

Are you going to have people bring their Squares then sew them on at the 2012 burn? Like come stop by camp, have a beer and spend 20-45 minutes sewing on their pre-made patch?

Would it be easier if the quilt stayed a constant width, but then grew left to right? Sorta like a panorama picture? I understand that this is not how usable quilts are done, but this is more of a decorative piece right?

Keep in mind, I've never made a quilt and might have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, and will not be offended if I'm told as much!
