OOH and I forgot to mention that she is totally right....we need to have an eplayan fashion show at the MnG so everyone on the costume thread can show off their final creations and everyone can see them in person.

Who wants to plan it out with Doc!?!?

That MnG needs to be longer (and I agree with JK about making it more exclusionary...) for all the stuff we want to do.

I don't have a crush on LF - or I guess I have crushes on all my friends and favorite people. Though, having met him, I'm pretty sure I could take Boyfriend out in a fight.

Wow, very nice and not sure how I managed to miss it at the meet and greet.

Thanks drawingablank. Most people didn't see it...I wore it there but was quickly put away due to being hot and then I put it back on when I left but it was pretty bright under the tents so not too visible. I'm trying to make it better for next year though...so we shall see.

Mish was up yesterday and gave me the coolest fur breechcloth. She gave it to me and said, "This is for you but don't, do not, try it on until after I leave!" Heh heh heh...

30 seconds after she and her trailer rolled off, an observer would have seen clothes flyin in all directions and a furry blur heading for the house. I bounced into Sweetpea's room with a big Ta-Da! Sure, she rolled her eyes but she really does love it :D
The landlord had a good laugh when he saw me cutting firewood while wearing the paratrooper skirt from Quick so he should get a good cackle if he ever sees me mowing the lawn in the breechcloth... We have a really cool landlord!

So Joann Fabrics had a huge coupon weekend and I bought fabric to make Tron Robe 2.0 (nicer fabric on the outside and flannel lining :D )...Also got some red yarn to make a wig for what may be my Halloween costume and potential 2012 playa outfit: "Raggedy Ann"

But then looking online for images to design the hair I found "Goth Raggedy Ann" so now I think I'll have to make 2 versions...sigh. At least I still have some "time" to do this all, right??

The Joanns by us sucks for fabrics, but they had Butterick patterns on sale for .99 each so I bought a stack for potential future modification. In their historical line they have some interesting corsets and several bolero style jacket patterns, plus they had a 50's retro apron pattern that looks like it might convert into an interesting skirt. Picked up some purple tie dye flannel for linings, but their selection of fabrics for playa wear is poor (at least for my taste in Playa wear).

Visited another nearby fabric store that stocks mostly home decor fabrics and picked up some heavy, non stretchy, purple crushed velvet (crushed in an interesting pattern) to make a utility belt with. It's a drapery fabric and wonder who would actually put drapes made from it in their house.

FWIW, the Joanne's by me has some pretty cool fabric on 50% off for fall/halloween. I found the same exact fabric used for the betabrands disco pants for $5/yard..

Drawingablank - that fabric sounds beautiful. Looking forward to seeing your finished belt.

JS - Really? That fabric looks so specialized!! Which Joann's is it?
The one I went to near the University is setup different than the one on 50 so I had a tough time finding fabrics...but I also wasn't looking for the Halloween style when I went so I didn't take a good look.

I'm a bit gun shy of fabrics like that - have some patches of a similar material on the patch pants and the metallic wore completely off leaving just the black fabric it is bonded to.

Joanns does have some great Halloween fabrics here, but the nice ones are all very sheer - not something I would likely want to make a coat from. If I find a suitable flannel printed both sides for the lining it wouldn't be too much work, but to have to use a shell, liner, and a lining just seems like more effort than its worth.

Don't be gun shy about shopping online, especially if you're not in a last-minute crush before the playa. Places like Distinctive Fabric (burner owned, too) and others do free swatches (x number for free, and they reset the count after you place an order), and you can usually get a wider selection of stuff than a local fabric/craft store might carry (unless you live in NYC, SF, or LA). Even in SF we end up ordering a fair amount of stuff online, and I can't say we've had a bad experience yet.

I'm not gun shy about shopping online, just about those shiny metallic fabrics.

Being 5 minutes from NYC we have a pretty diverse number of places to fabric shop, it's just that Joanns is the closest and runs the best sales. When faced with buying 16 yards of fabric per coat, those 40% off coupons make a big difference. We actually have a huge Joanns about 1.5 hours from here that has the best fabric selection I've ever seen and is where I found the pink holographic zebra print for my playa coat, but it's inconvenient to shop there unless I am heading upstate.

I have found Distinctive Fabrics to have a really nice selection of faux furs and it's my go to place for them, but I'm generally not into the faux fur too much - it just seems too much like the "uniform" of the playa and I would rather have my creations be radically different.

Mine is completely black...so it is extremely easy to find in decent prices.
With the coupon I got 8yds of really nice fabric for $27+tx. And I'm pretty sure I bought more than I needed (just in case) :D

drawingablank - Thanks for the heads up in the glued metallic pieces. That would be a huge MOOPy mess and would have made me a very upset girl :x

My point about swatches was that you get a sample of the actual fabric to see how it'll hold up. For me, metallics almost need to be stretched, pulled, and even scratched and scraped to see how they behave.

The stuff I had issues with were a sort of a shimmery, almost a lame fabric that I had swatches in gold, silver and a teal. The teal and gold held up well, but the silver all wore off the black backing fabric. I'm not sure it was glued on but was definitely bound to the underyling fabric somehow - possibly sprayed on.

Yes, and the swatches from Distinctive Fabrics are big enough to wash, dry, iron and scorch with a flame, before you take them out to match your thread and notions. 8) I love DF and give them lots of my money... shhh don't tell my husband...

I just got REALLY excited at this idea. Gawd I really need to get my costume ideas solidified so I can start purchasing/sewing. I'm not even entirely sure WHAT sort of a costume to bring to what? Other than tutu for Tuesday and something pirate-y for Wednesday.. I'm at a loss otherwise.
