Locking threads for sock abuse?!

Post by Elderberry » Fri Sep 23, 2011 8:41 pm

Why lock an interesting thread because of attacks being made by socks? Why punish us all by locking what might have previously been an interesting thread? Wouldn't it be more productive to either chastise, out or ban the sock?

As n example: http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=50370

Just wondering.

JK- I don't have the power to ban the sock, so while it's under discussion I've locked the thread to keep from having to check every 5 minutes to see if he's attacking someone else. Once actions have been taken, the thread will be unlocked.

Socks (and the person who runs them) still fall under the ToS, but if someone uses a sock just to attack all their accounts have to be looked at. If you're getting hit in the face by a hand-puppet it's not the puppet doing the hitting.

I apologize for the inconvenience, it should be resolved soon.

Ditto, jkisha. Completely petty, clueless, church-lady overreaction. The eplaya does fine at policing itself. Moderators -- please consider confining yourselves to mooping the spam.

Facking delicious. I actually prefer cold brie to the baked stuff. I mean.. it has it's merits, but there's nothing like a nice, thick, cold slab 'o brie on some quality cracker with a decent fruit slice to chase.

Eric, I'm sorry but I feel you seriously overstepped here.

This board has been able to police itself quite effectively over the past 10+ years, the few times it got out of hand the board spoke up and the people in charge knew quite clearly we had a problem. The incident in the thread that was referenced does not warrant a thread lock.

The best thing that could have been done is let the organic, self-policing ability of this dynamic online community do what it is quite capable of doing. If it runs it's course and things can't be controlled then people will call out in public for you or someone in power to click the button and lock the door.

Until then from one moderator (I have 3 BBS's I run) to another let me offer you some advice...yours to take or leave as you see fit.

EVERYTHING in moderation....including moderation. And when in doubt...do nothing.

(If you want the short version of what I'm saying, see Bob's post.)

You all may be right, but I feel I made the right decision at this time.

I am waiting for an "Elder Mod" to come on so we can discuss it, and I will be the first to admit that it's not something I did easily. Welcome to the learning curve.

From time to time, a user registers here with the sole purpose of antagonizing other users who take their bait. It's nothing more than a bored person, doing a modern day prank telephone call. These pests bring nothing of real substance to the board, other than to irritate others and feed their need for attention.

As an 8 year veteran of this forum, I know that a time out is sometimes needed to figure out the best way to deal with the pests. The alternative is to quarantine (or temporarily hide) a thread for the same purpose. By locking it, it allows everyone to at least read the banter, while putting any further abuse on hold.

An adjustment is in the works, and I'm sure that thread will be unlocked shortly.

The problem with this policy is that a troll can create socks with impunity, and use them to shutdown popular threads. This isn't a good precedent, and the core problem--the troll with the socks--is still left unaddressed.

Badger, this is less of a policy that it is having to deal with the occasional goober that pops up every now and then. It really is something that doesn't happen often and the thread will be open shortly. There are some posts that I want to make to it!!

Where do I want to go with this? Hell, I dunno. We did what we did, not necessarily due to the sock but to repair a technical issue that the sock created. It was serious enough to have to slap a bandaid on it for a hot split minute to fix the issue... and it was fixed.

Being another long-term member (and moderator) here, I can count on one hand the number of times I locked out a thread for this purpose; every time the same argumets pop up over "abuse of moderator privilege", "being heavy-handed", etc... but the other side is it's usually a *very* temporary situation, and as you may have noticed, the thread was shortly thereafter reopened once the issue had been resolved.

Be that as it may, the issue is over, the thread is unlocked, the issue has been resolved, so can we go over to the bar and have a cold one instead? ;)

Sometimes things happen quickly. A lot of threads get pretty heated and I know you have seen them in the past. Charges have been filed, allegations made etc. A board users only recourse is to NOT read the thread or complain to a mod - other than that they cant stop the abuse so self policing only goes so far. Thats where the mods would step in and let cooler heads prevail. If a thread is locked its not erased so if your comment is relevant now, it will be just as relevant tomorrow, or the next day when it is unlocked. Eric did the right thing and slowed things down a hair.

Very few actions on the board are permanent and we do error on the side of caution. from sitting with the other mods and speaking face to face, we all agree that free speech is your right. At the same time your rights stop at the tip of my nose. By that I mean you can say what you want until you threaten a person or make libelous statements, or out a person who desires anonymity. Then we act.

Ever want to know why something is the way it is on the thread? Contact the actionable mod listed at the bottom of whatever thread is in question. We cover the eplaya about 20 hours a day with the time zone differences so ask - its that easy.

I would love to help out...but the odds of that happening are about as good as NFL fans thinking AL Davis is a good NFL owner. Never gonna happen.

Truth be told the mods do a great job...and the occasional controversy is good to see who is really supporting the board and who gives a damn.
