Cheese
God I love the stuff. Brie. Sharp cheddar. Smoked gouda. Hell, gimme some limburger on Wasa bread and I'll consider licking your toes. Maybe.. only if they smell as good as the limburger.

Re: Cheese
Man, you guys should have stopped by our camp after the man burn. I did a phenomenal cheese spread if I do say so myself. Five or six different cheeses, fruit wedges, salami and an assortment of olives, wine and rosemary crackers. The perfect interlude between the burn and the rest of the night's festivities.

Ohhhh snap. I'll get one of those huge wedges of fresh parmesan "for some pasta".. and end up eating it all in nice, thin slices. Yum. It's got that je ne se quoi of nutty flavor. The best are the little crystals of age embedded in it.
Reminds me of when I dated this girl from Wisconsin once. If you've ever been to WI or spent time there, you know the cheese stereotype is no joke.. it's straight up no shitting you for real. I brought some 8 year old cheddar back to the family farm one afternoon and made the obligatory 3pm cheese and sausage plate to share. Dad walks in.. grabs a slice of the 8 year and says..
"Mmmm.. you know it's a good cheddah when it sucks the spit right out of your mouth"

You know.. I was decently bummed when I found out that Inspiratum was being moved away from the 7:30 plaza. We would have been neighbors. ESPECIALLY after hearing things like this!

Re: Cheese
I should post up the menu for the week. This was definitely a gourmet burn for me this year, and we had plenty to share. I also did a Brie en Croute Earlier in the week that you would have loved too, with raspberry sauce and a touch of brown sugar and maple syrup, also served with apple wedges. (I actually gave serious thought to making this for the M&G but I couldn't figure out how I would have been able to transport it.

Re: Cheese
One of the things that amazed me in america was the truely deplorable selection of cheeses you guys have (or don't) it is the one thing i can still say the brits do better (so far) even in a corner shop we have a selection of about 10 or so different cheeses in our supermarkets (way smaller than yours) we have usually got a whole aisle (about 20 shelves) of pre-packaged cheeses and then a deli counter of more cheeses.
Is it legal to bring cheese through customs? if so i can bring you some Extra mature cheddar, flavored cheeses like chees with chocolate (really yummy) or mexicana (cheese with jalapenos) or many other soft cheeses that show brie up for the imposter it is! plus a few good blue cheeses that are simply georgeous (stilton and broccolli soup anyone?)

Re: Cheese
I think a lot of that is where you shop. For example - where I am in Michigan if you shop at MallMart, they have 300 types pop, 600 types of condensed soup, and 7 types of cheese, but if you drive 1/4 of a mile up the road to the Meijer, they have 3-4 deli cases of cheese. Not to say that the selection is better than the UK, but it certainly isnt nearly as pathetic.
I think a lot of that is the fascination in the US with packaged foods and eating out. Whenever I tell people that I dont eat fast food and cook 7 days a week, maybe go out to eat once a month, I am looked at like a complete freak.
I made a linguine in a sun dried tomato pesto with grated pecorino romano and I swear you would have thought I was fucking Emeril the way people reacted to it. And I am not that great of a cook. The wife on the other-hand... Wow!

Re: Cheese
While this may not be the best cheese in the world, (it's possibly the worst) I find it so portable that I can keep a can in the glove box of my car, for a quick snack during commutes. It never spoils, since there is virtually nothing natural in this "cheesy-like product".

I am British, living in London, I am dating a Wisconsin woman and travel there often, I am appalled that a state that calls itself the Cheese State seems to be clueless on how to make cheese, if it's not orange, it's imported, but still so little choice.junglesmacks wrote:Reminds me of when I dated this girl from Wisconsin once. As far as grocery stores go, Whole Foods has a pretty wide selection of cheeses. And we have specialty cheese stores in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills that might just boggle your mind.

Not only do our local supermarkets (Safeway) have entire cheese sections (yay) with decidedly more than 7 types of cheese, in Berkeley we are rather proud of our secret weapon... which shall remain secret... but it would make taking up the challenge oh so easy... heh heh heh...
