Personal goals for 2012 burn
Did a search - couldnt find anything so I am starting this. If it is already in existence - see my disclaimer.
What do you hope to accomplish on a personal level before the burn this year? An art project? A financial landmark? A new job? Discovering a cure for cancer?
Here are my 2 biggies:
1) Finishing getting out of debt - about 1/3 of the way there.
2) Finishing losing the 100lbs I need to lose - 55 down - 45 to go.

That? Is an awesome accomplishment. Hope you're proud of yourself!!hookahdude wrote: Here are my 2 biggies:

2) Finishing losing the 100lbs I need to lose - 55 down - 45 to go.
My two are:
1) Quit smoking. I'll be 30 the day after Christmas and I vowed I would not spend my thirties being a consumer of tobacco. That crap is for the birds. So stupid to go broke just to kill myself quicker.
2) Get involved. Whether it be in the community, on an art project (or three), sewing costume(s), crafting more, etc.
I used to do a shit ton of crafting and then I went to college... and stopped. I miss DOING shit. I have no kids. I recently broke up w/the man I stupidly thought I would marry. With age comes the ebb and flow of friendship because people get married, have kids, etc. etc.
I have wicked issues w/social anxiety and I'm just ready to get a grip on all of it. I hope to accomplish some semblance of self worth in being more actively involved in stuff. Sittin' at home with my cat, moping about my ex or the lack of friends close by is gettin' old. REALLY OLD.

I quite smoking about a month before I started to lose the weight. I went cold turkey and, in a way, my smoking cessation kind of led o the weight loss. Every time I wanted a cigarette, I went for a 5-10 minute walk. Eventually, I just started walking every day. Now I am up to about 4-6 miles a day. You can do this and it might be the single most important thing you do in your life!! Good luck! Kick ass!!

Re: Personal goals for 2012 burn
Plans for next year's burn are still coming together, so I'll be adding and jettisoning goals as the year goes by
I've got a few goals.
First, I want to grow the size and scale of our camp. In 2011 we went smaller than in years past (we'd over-extended ourselves in years past, and wanted our first year back after a few years off to be low key), and it felt like some of the design and organizational changes really seemed to fall into place. New/additional shade structures and expanding on a few other things will give me the chance to stretch a bit in the logistics department.
Second, I want to expand on the art within the camp idea. In 2011 we built a wooden facade to cover our van. Part of it was to just cover up the look of the dumpy van at camp, but part of it was to enhance the atmosphere. That worked out incredibly well, our living space felt a lot less utilitarian, and really contributed to the wonderful experience we had this year. Yes, I want more of that.
Third, I want to improve my wardrobe. I've got some great stuff (pirate coats, shiny suits, etc) but I want more. Clothing has always taken a back seat to everything else I'm working on, and I end up spending a good portion of my time (during the day at least) in jeans or shorts. That's something I'd like to work on.
Fourth, I want to work on an art installation with my girlfriend (the kind that goes through the artery process, and may even be big/bold enough to apply for a grant). She's done that before (the Spinnin' Anemone Carousel back in 2001) and is itching to do it again, and we really enjoy working together (on and off the playa). In 2011 I was able to leverage some newly acquired industrial design skills and use some high tech tools to achieve some really cool results, and this year we plan to both delve deeper into that as we work out the giant orchid project. I'm looking forward to learning even more skills and working with new tools, as well as getting more experience with some awesome machines along the way.

Re: Personal goals for 2012 burn
Hookah- congrats on the weight loss! That's my #2 goal (getting a job is still #1). With the health issues I've had over the last year coupled with a year & a half unemployment I've gained about 40 pounds. I am already starting to get rid of it (10 down since the Burn), but I want to get rid of more. I would love to be down to 180ish by next years Burn (lean enough for me, husky enough for The Boyfriend... ), we shall see.
As for the Event itself- the last few years I've only made one custom silver jewelry piece that I gift to someone during the week. I never have a set person in mind, I just carry it with me knowing I'll meet someone who is the right person. This year it was actually someone I know fairly well in SF- we just bonded really amazingly this year.
For 2012 I want to make about one a month so I have at least 10 to hand out. There are some people I've been wanting to give one to, but due to my arbitrary "one piece" rule it hasn't happened.

Re: Personal goals for 2012 burn
I felt over extended this year, especially on the return end of things. My goal is to get more LOCAL involvement for our camp. I had so much help for everything else and then we arrive here all alone to unload and clean the entire infrastructure. That sucked and thoroughly exhausted me!
I also want to delegate more and not feel like the whole project lives or dies on my shoulders. We took enough food, water, shelter and bedding for a DOZEN people! Nobody to blame but ourselves, but we simply need to provide the infrastructure and encourage others to be more involved/invested.
Third, would be the possible acquisition of a bus instead of throwing $2k into a rental truck every year. The biggest challenge to that is a place to keep it. Not the top of the list, but a goal worth pursuing.

Graidawg, don't be silly... no bar to set, no floors or ceilings. It's not a contest. We've each got our own interests, challenges, resources, and all that junk. I didn't list stuff to be boastful or try to outdo anybody, so much as just share what I think is on deck as well as remind myself what all stuff I've got to figure out how to make happen in the next 11ish months.

Re: Personal goals for 2012 burn
2012 is definitely the year to get the Tadpole Trike done although until it's done, I'll reserve making a goal of pedaling it on Jungo Rd.
Aside from that, a lot of work-related stuff. My dad's trying to retire and I'm not trying very hard to take over business. Other boring stuff includes finances related to running the business.
I made LED blinkies for this year but didn't make it (long story ...) I made 10 of them, but I like Eric's idea of making just one nice thing. I have trouble with letting it be "unfair" — that I can't wait until the last day and give it out like some kind of fucking award for best experience. That's why I went with 10. I'd be happier having two, I guess, so I could pretend like the second one is the "award" and be more free with the first.
A friend introduced me to meditation and I have found that it's helped me get to know my heart. I want to try and put her out there and make a real connection possible, but she's pretty delicate and easily wounded, so I think I need to tough through some hurt — at least take the risk of the possibility of being hurt.

Re: Personal goals for 2012 burn
I want to get my weight down under 200, then set a new weight goal. This will get my BP down too. This has been the year of annoying health problems, and it seems as if every niggling little thing sets me back.
I'm very happy with the Home for Wayward Art, although now and then it crosses my mind to put in for theme camp status instead of being reliant on Hushville or the generosity of eplayans. But then ... I worry we'll get cozied up to asshats. I'm poised to take a larger role in Hushville, and I fret over details. I don't know if there's a concrete goal in there, or a decision.
I want to crack out the beading supplies and make pendants again. I made hundreds in 2004/2005, and it took me five years to hand them all out. I still have a few knocking around. Good cold weather activity when Larry's not home.
Sew more, which hinges on my tendonitis. Right now I can't use scissors. I have patterns and a ton of wonderful fabrics, a workroom too messy to use easily, and frustration. I suppose cleaning up the workroom is then a sub-goal I can work on. Then come swearing what I've made, and getting Larry into something other than his kilt or his boxers (which he never wear at home, just the playa!)
I want to do a small bit of trash fence art. Unplaced, just go out and set it up out of the way against one of the posts. I love random art like that. I've also considered attaching very small paintings to the signposts around the city. Would they find new homes or would they be MOOP if I forgot where they all were?

I can usually manage any two of those three at the same time, but never all 3 as of yet. We all have goals.

1. Go see the trash fence.
2. Weight fitness. 2011 was quit smoking, and three things really,er, four things really helped: I promised a burning man friend that I would quit by the next burn; my health insurance cost would triple if I kept smoking; I got nicotine lozenges for about three weeks; lastly I utilized the fiction of grieving for a beloved friend (my cigarettes) who was dead and gone. Sometimes I miss them so. But I can't bring them back.
3. I want to bring a few musical instruments, and bring that facet of myself to the playa.

This year I want to get back in shape and losed a bit of weight and get toned up.
I want to learn how to weld.
I want to learn how to sew!
And I want to take up belly dancing.
But most of all, I want to allow myself the time to do all of these things!

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

I took me a while to "get things right" on the radio when I joined the local fire department. Possibly if $ allows it you could buy a cheap scanner to overhear radio traffic of the police, fire departments and whatever is out there where you live... Fire especially is usually pretty short and to the point on the radio....Quick and concise. Air Ambulance Pilots tend to chat quite a bit I'm my experience. Listening to the scanner may give you a bit more exposure to radio language style and some cool jargon and acronyms's to use although it is typical for transmissions to be plain speech.MisaBlue wrote:Learn to operate the radio more, so I dont sound as retarded on Perimeter shifts...

My goals that would be nice to hit by next burn are--
Get back on and stay on the wagon of loosing weight and exercising more.
Fully fund my Roth IRA and have enough emergency reserve savings for 6 months of expenses.
Give away my Mutant Vehicle.
Upgrade to a more suitable Travel Trailer.
Organize my welding and repair camp so that people who want to help can and people that want to learn have opportunity to be paired up with a repair artist for a bit of experience.
Cut down the birch trees in my back yard that are leaning perilously toward my house and annoying my neighbor.
And all the usual things about decreasing the disaster area look around here...

Oh - and another thing -
For those needing to lose a fuck-ton of weight like me - check out the movie Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead on Netflix. I did, then I followed the diet the two guys in that movie did. It sucks, but it works!

Re: Personal goals for 2012 burn
Accumulating the gas money to drive out from Michigan is always an accomplishment. This year towing the camper it ran us about 2200$. I plan on returning, the wife and son may or may not. If they do, they're flying. For their peace of mind as well as mine. Sure, it will be even more expensive but sheesh, those 2 are starting to act like a pair of tweens sitting in the back seat
This year I used a sm dome tent to keep shit out of the camper to make it easier to crawl over shit. Next year, bigger utility tent to get even more shit out.
More solar lighting and panels.

Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

Maryanimal, we have some goals in common! Sewing and dancing.
I'd like to start with some simple playa hoods, since I can't seem to find what I want commercially. As for dance--bellydance is the only dance form I ever studied (if only for a little while) that made me think more kindly of my body. I hope to choreograph something for myself & be more comfortable improvising in that discipline. Before the Burn, a nice girl in a dance shop told me I should pick up a YMCA punchcard & come dance with live drummers every Monday--so 2 days from now I'm going to give it a shot.
Other goals: write a lot more, maintain weight & blood pressure, buy and use a jeweler's drill, increase my driving experience, and stop putting up with default world bull@#$%. Life is short.

I've always wanted to learn belly dancing Savannah. I heve a sewing machine but it's very old, so I'm saving for a new one AND take some sewing classes! Hooded cape...is that what you're talking about? Good for you on the dancing with the drummers! That sounds great!Savannah wrote:Maryanimal, we have some goals in common! Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.
Re: Personal goals for 2012 burn
Thanks! You're going to love bellydancing, I'm almost positive. (And if you're unsure after the first time, give it 2 more chances!)
As for the hoods . . . I want large, stand-alone hoods for sun & dust protection (my upper chest & shoulders bake in the sun, even with sunscreen). I presently use large scarves, but would like something bigger & more structured, with an interesting drape to the back, & more coverage for my bangs in the front for when I first wake up.
I'd also like a fur hood or two. (I've a wolf hood I bought online, but the cut is not ideal)
