Yeah, but it'll last you thru your grandchildrens generation if cared for properly... or at least longer than that chicken!

Anyway, with all the McJackintheBox being sold, there is no shortage of cow hide... but it still pisses me off that tanned whole grain is so f'n expensive.
I bet they have cheap leather products coming from Chinese prisons.

Okay, as the token mostly-vegan on here can I just point out a few things I've noticed on this thread?

1) The vitriol against PETA on here is exactly the same as the vitriol that PETA spews out. Why is yours okay and theirs isn't? Either over-the-top is bad for everyone or it's fair game for everyone. Think about it.

2) Drawingablank- I am fully in support of hunting as long as the animal is used ("display" hunting is not okay in my book). You at least know where your meat comes from and do the work to obtain it. I respect that.

3) Vegetarians & vegans have been around for centuries (look at the Buddhist & Jain traditions), they can function quite fine in the third world. First world assumptions go both ways.

4) As for vegans not surviving in the midwest in winter without modern transportation- um... Most people would be miserable in the midwest in winter without modern transportation. Salted beef, salted fish, salted pork, canned or pickled vegetable... and that's about it. I have cook books from the 1890's and 1910- trust me, not food most of us would want to eat, vegan or not.

I have never lived anywhere with "text book" seasons- born in Florida (2 seasons: hot and muggy, & nice and not-too-muggy), grew up in Arizona (3 seasons: hot as fuck, hot and muggy and pouring rain, and absolutely perfect) and now live in SF where seasons rather randomly change from day to day or within the day (cool and wet, cool and dry, sunny and cool, sunny and warm {"hot" to the locals}, wet, kinda cold, very cold but not for long, very warm but not for long. Note: fog is possible during any of the "cool" periods, or even at 6pm after an 85 degree day).

I have visited places with "weather", I don't like them. Winter is lovely for a day or two, as long as I have a fire, The Boyfriend, some blankets and a good book. Booze is a bonus.

See? I never would have known that and I would die. There is something romantic about being able to just stick your vodka in the snowbank outside the door instead of the freezer, but no one can steal it from my freezer.

Note to self: snow= more booze.

I was stationed at Ft Drum for 4 or 5 winters... and if we could have had booze in the field - there would not have been a sober soldier in the entire training area. Physical training policy on Ft Drum? PT was cancelled ONLY if the temp dropped below -20.. I shit you not.

Well, quite frankly I am a meat hunter, but on the rare occasion I kill something exceptional I will mount the skin as well. I really don't like to waste any part of a kill. At any rate I waste none of the meat and won't kill anything I don't plan to eat.

But is it really Vitriol? PETA spews out tons of unsubstantiated facts and expects all the sheep just to believe it because they heard it in the media.

I'm not a really political person and believe in live and let live, but I have had a real issue with PETA since it came to light that PETA members were sending death threats to Make a Wish Foundation Kids (terminally ill kids) that wanted to go hunting before they died. Seriously - what on earth could possibly be more fucked up than sending death threats to a dying child - for any reason?

I am an outdoorsman and unlike the PETA bunch I put my money where my mouth is every time I buy a hunting licence, ammo, arrows, etc... - all licence fees plus an exorbitant excise tax (10% last I checked) on the other stuff goes to support wildlife management and purchasing habitat for it. The millions of acres of public lands in our state that are available for hikers, campers, bird watchers, PETA members, as well as sportsmen are primarily purchased and maintained through the cost of hunting and fishing licenses. That alone costs me over 100.00 per year, how many PETA people can say they paid that much towards the same goal? The Federal excise tax on archery sales alone is over 8 million dollars a year which is dedicated to wildlife by federal law.

I also enjoy seeing wildlife and as such accept and follow the laws dictated by the scientists tasked with keeping healthy populations of wildlife. What I can't accept is that wildlife is more valuable than a human life, or that some knee jerk reaction about killing an animal is a valid method for maintaining healty wildlife populations (as opposed to using actual science) in a country that is increasingly urbanized. The real fact is thanks to hunting licences, federal excise taxes on ammo, and sound wildlife management - North American wildlife is in a far healthier state than it was in 100 years ago.

There have been plenty of "unsubstantiated facts" about vegetarians/vegans tossed about as if they were true on this thread, there is just as much incorrectness about what people think we're like as there is in what PETA says.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a PETA supporter; fanatics leave a bad taste in my mouth no matter who they are. I was just pointing out that what is being said against them is no better than what PETA says against meat.

Eric, I must apologise if you construed this as a personal attack - I have no issues with vegetarians or vegans (now that I now what vegans are) as long as they don't try to cram their views down my throat.

If I'm not mistaken chocolate is only an issue if it contains milk. My wife and daughters are vegans and I'm amazed at the things that contain animal products or are tested on animals(sometimes seemingly unnecessarily). Anything with gelatin including marshmallows, cosmetics, clothes (obviously), and even some refined sugar is treated with animal products (bones if I recall correctly) so even if something looks vegan friendly it may not be. We spend a lot of time looking at labels when shopping but primarily we eat a LOT of fresh vegetables and avoid most processed foods (which I feel strongly about, veganism aside).

I used to do a lot of baking but not much any longer, what's the point for just me? The only exception is small batches of fortified brownies but they wouldn't touch them anyway. I've had some pretty amazing cinnamon rolls, cakes and cookies that my daughter has whipped up, bakery quality stuff.

I respect their beliefs as they do mine. My wife is not averse to cooking meat for Sic Pup and I on occasion just as I have no issues growing/preparing/eating all veg meals several times a week.

I will say that when I travel and see the feed lots along the side of the road it does give me pause.

I cook bacon when I know they will be out of the house for awhile and air the place out as much as posisble before they return.

I just thought PETA's stance was a bit hypocritical given their marketing approach and I took exception to the inference that the photo might be offensive to "almost everyone".

I know a few vegans here in Aus and they find it damn hard work - and to be honest I find them hard work if we go out together.

The vegan range of food here is getting larger.

I recently discovered that the process of making white wine (at some of my fave wineries) involves using milk and some fishy thing to "clean" the wine or something. So that's another reason I could't go vegan, well aside from bacon and cheese that is.

On the dead cat thing, some of our indigenous people have in SA and WA have worked out that grilled cat ain't that bad. Feral cats are a big problem here. Although I could never knowingly eat a cat - I love my little fella way to much to think of him as a food group.

Justkiddingjustkidding Sic Pup, I'm sure your wife and daughter are different people :P and I imagine that both are quite lovely and pink. 8) Obviously "mostly" does not include them. I'm just jaded , sorry, by too much ostentatious asceticism from the underpaid, where I live. I'm sure some of these folks would eat meat if they could afford to. Can't really blame them for making a virtue of necessity, but, they shouldn't blame me for eating right, since I can.
