Has there ever been a Catholic Mass on the playa?
I'm just curious. Please don't let my question devolve into a space for Catholic vitriol.

Open your mouth and insert the Body of Christ.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

Where can and can't Catholics perform mass? Does the ground have to be consecrated? De-consecrated afterwards?

This car has been on the playa several times, and I'm pretty sure that some sort of mass has taken place inside of this. The art car, Carthedral, is an awesome vehicle, and the owner Rebecca is a sweetie!

Re: Has there ever been a Catholic Mass on the playa?
and, since no ones tried to answer an honest question:
I haven't heard of a Catholic mass, but seeing as it would require a consecrated Priest to perform I would be surprised one had happened (I would also be surprised running into an Orthodox service). It would probably require the approval of a bishop as well. Lots of hoops on the Church side.
There are many religious services out there, but most of them of from traditions where lay-persons can lead them (not just Protestant branches, but Jewish, Islamic, and Eastern traditions).

Can't answer for the status quo Catolics but if the OP is referring to priests I'm sure they'll be doing it as close to Kidsville as they can.

Re: Has there ever been a Catholic Mass on the playa?
so a priest, a rabbi and a buddhist monk are in a huge uncontrolled burn in Kidsville, when the monk screams
"Brothers, we MUST SAVE THE CHILDREN!"
the rabbi yells back
"FUCK THE CHILDREN"
the priest asks
"Do you think we have time?"...

Well, thank you for keeping the Catholic bashing to a humorous level rather than an outright slug-fest. I actually would love to see a Mass celebrated on the playa. I am a Catholic, but I don't subscribe to all the rules laid out by the Vatican. I've been lucky enough to participate in Masses in other countries, and they have been very different than the subduded liturgies that you see in the US....awesome music, dancing, speaking from the heart. I'm just curious to see what a Mass on the playa would be and who would show up for it.

Re: Has there ever been a Catholic Mass on the playa?
Well, for that to happen, I guess the first thing you'd have to do is convince a priest to attend with you. Then you can setup a camp and hold a mass.jcliff wrote:Well, thank you for keeping the Catholic bashing to a humorous level rather than an outright slug-fest. I know a wonderful Orthodox priest who is a long time burner - stopped attending a few years ago due to health reasons. I'll check with himEric wrote:and, since no ones tried to answer an honest question:

Orthodox priests can have sex with women and get married.

Technically, they all "CAN" have sex with woemn and get married.
They choose not to.
Doesn' matter why they choose not to -
It is still a choice.

I think that past a certain level you have to be celibate in the Orthodox church. And of course the monks are celibate. Except Rasputin. I can't believe I'm mentioned Rasputin twice on this board in the past two or three days.

Re: Has there ever been a Catholic Mass on the playa?
All I know is that growing up all our priests were married and their wives were called "Matushka", which means mother. (you know, Priests were called "Father" so I guess calling their wives mother made sense.) So maybe they weren't supposed to have sex before marriage, but it obviously didn't preclude dating. Is that being celibate? Or are you saying "past a certain level" meaning like a Bishop or something? I really don't know about that; but if that were the case, marriage wouldn't be a very good career move.
