Water in Alturas

Post by Sandwichman » Sat Aug 21, 2004 11:08 pm

Does anyone have advice where to fill up my water containers in Alturas?

I am coming from Portland and would like to fill up later in the drive.

Four Corners Market across from the Chevron are very Burner friendly, and they have a hose in the back that they let us tank up with. I was okay for water but my caravan companions took advantage of this extremely generous offer. There'll likely be something of a crowd of people on their way to the Burn when you get there...nice way to get your Burn on a little early :)

Suggestion: get your fruits, veggies and meat there. They're very cool for letting us all tank up on their dime, they deserve our support. I'm getting my specialized provisions here at home but I'll get the common/delicate stuff like peaches, green onions, shrimp and eggs there.

I've been filling up there for a few years, but I'd sure feel better if I could confirm that they're still there and up for the same deal.
I called Information for the number to "Four Corners Market" in Alturas, they had no listing. I can't remember the name of the store... are you sure it's "Four Corners Market"?
I tried calling the Chevron to get info but got a fax machine.

Yes, I would much rather be positive I can get water rather than only going on a legend. I don't mean that offensively I just don't want to drive that far to find out I can't get water in Alturas and have to find another way.

Captain — in truth I didn't look at the name of the store when I got there, I'm going on Wally's information. But, Alturas is a small town and there's only one grocery store across from the Chevron, and it should be fairly easy to spot. Otherwise, you might be right, it may have shut its doors :( A good way to check is to find the address of the Chevron station, note the street, and look for a grocery store that's on the same street in the telephone directory.

And Sandwichman, yeah, it probably is a good idea to not leave without your water, it's the most important and one of the heaviest things you're bringing. Just drive carefully and take it easy and maybe leave early so you're not rushing. The Cedarville Pass is right after Alturas, be careful on those curves especially if you're pulling a trailer!

Appreciate the advice. We will be stopping in Paisley on the way down and continuing the following morning. It is probably going to be best that I fill my water here in town. I am not hauling any trailers or such so I won't have a large amount of drag.
