In 2002 when I took a plane trip to Reno (and rented a car to get to BRC), I went around the various neighborhoods looking for garage sales, and only 1 had a bicycle, wanting $20. I knew I could get a brand new childs bike for $30 at Target (or was in Walmart), so that's what I got, and a cheap plastic crate and duct tape to hold it to the front. It all worked really well.

On Sunday night I was at the duck club, and a lamplighter took me up on the offer to have it (I dropped it off as I left Monday morning), as she had no bike but was doing cleanup for the next 2 weeks. She was sharing with 3 or 4 others using a golfcart to get around to the far off places (like the Duck).

Pity nobody is allowed a golfcart any more :(

The place to go is the El Rancho Swap meet. You need to get there early saturday morning for the best stuff - there's less on sunday and there will probably be a gang of local burners there looking for bikes, so get in early. We got our bikes there for $5 a piece, but that was some months ago. The vendors, at least, probably will not be keen top your need, so they won't try to jack you on the price...

Here's a mapquest on how to get there from Truckee.

Good hunting.
Thanks to Addis, I had more free time.

I was in my local (Hopkins, MN) Goodwill store, and there were quite a few good bikes for around $15. Go checkout your Goodwill stores (if you have one), you may have a similar experience.

I don't see a Goodwill in Reno (according to online phone search), but if there was, it maybe out of bikes already bought by many burners showing up.
