AntiM wrote:I broke out the patterns and contemplated new outfits in case we get to go to the Utah Decomm. Tendonitis be damned. But I just can't decide! Something simple, and uses my shiny shimmery sheer stash of fabrics. A suit for MyLarry, if I can swing the buttonholes.

LOL, 55 yards is nothing. I must have hundreds of yards of fabric to choose from. I went wild a few years back when the big local fabric shop in the mall went out of business, and when Jo-Ann crafts went from a hole in the wall shop to Big Box and sold off their "local" stock, and whenever there's been a killer sale, plus I inherited Mom's fabric stash. Raw silk and cottons and lurex and spandex and velvet (real and panne) and brocade and linings and polyester and gauze and sheers and taffeta and upholstery and tulle and rolls of yukata cotton prints and miniature prints for the dollhouse. I have three bins, two teaboxes, and a tall tansu (chest of drawers) full, plus heaps in the scrap basket and a few bolts on the (un)work table. Sheesh. Like my mother, I am a fabric addict.
How does the tendonitis react to a rotary cutter? I picked up a huge cutting mat (about 25.00 after a 50% off coupon) and plan to get a second one to tape end to end for longer pieces. I find the rotary is much faster than scissors or electric scissors, you can pin right to the cutting mat, and it reduces the strain on my back from cutting out patterns because it goes so fast. For inside curves I use a small diameter rotary, and the scissors are mainly just needed for the positioning notches. They even make rotary cutters with a sort of pistol grip these days which may be easier on you.

Yah, I can see a huge fabric collection in my future - 55 yards was just one trip to Joanns.

Buttonholes - for the coats I just put dummy buttons on and then sewed in snaps to hold it closed. I may practice making buttonholes in the future, but I wasn't really up to attempting it on long pile fur.

Most quality fur coats use snaps or heavy hooks, so you have the right idea.

I'd have to try the cutter, it may work. I do have a ton of JoAnn's coupons!
My problem is my thumb, it doesn't want to move in and out (up and down?); I have a limited range of motion. Think of the thumb's up gesture, it can be painful. Gripping is okay if I don't twist it. It gets better, then I do something as simple as roll over in bed or crease a piece of paper with my thumb, and BAM! I lose range of motion for days, weeks. There isn't even a surgical solution like there is for carpal tunnel. Frustrating.

Actually the sewing center there may have one they would let you try. Would be a shame to buy one only to find you can't use it.

I am pleased.

I have acquired a new breathing apparatus and UV 400 protective fashioneyewear.

A few small improvements and I will be able to use the JOTS at all the local fairs.

This is me being giddy.

Wait.. let me check..

I have his tattoos...

Dental work...

Eerily long eyebrows...

Same enormous.... sense of duty...

I am not related to him.

He was promoted and gave birth to a sock.

I hope that clarifies.

Dammit I was side tracked...

I picked up a bullhorn this afternoon.

I may have died and gone to heaven...

It is going to be handy, but they had a bigger one.

I must have it.

The one I have takes 4 "C" batteries.

The one I want - 8 "D" batteries AND it has a microphone on a coiled cord... and a siren... and a sling..

I am all weak in the knees at the thought.

Someday I will buy a bullhorn. I'm under the delusion that I could be funny on it.

There are too many bullhorns on the playa already.

You are delusional. Nobody is funny on a bullhorn - just loud.

I believe Crypto will be funny.

I believe I will be loud.

Primarily towards Boas.

Loud noises stun them.

Today I'm reading lots of unofficial survival guides, and finding some really awesome tips! (Don't worry, I have read the official survival guide, parts of it more than once, and plan to re-read it when the burn gets closer!) :)

The packing list just keeps growing.......... :D

I just got my "list" begun. I'm a fan of lists because they keep the jumblies out of my head. So far, it's in four categories: Supplies, Shelter, Clothing, Food|Drink|Gifts

My supplies list is already sort've out of control. *ahem* It's CRAZY how many little things I didn't even think about needing until I read it here on ePlaya and thought, "well..duh!" Like a cup! It makes the most obvious of sense but I'd only thought of plates, utensils & a water bottle for aqua.

Happy to share :) So here are a few that I picked up reading unofficial guides recently. Forgive me if any of these are repeats, eplaya seems to be all-knowing sometimes!!

- use spray-on sunscreen to avoid rubbing dust in with your sunscreen
- Freeze 2-liter bottles of water for ice to avoid icky yucky cooler melt (although I'm guessing that after a few days I'll have to get ice from center camp anyways)
- put some extra pillowcases and towels in big ziploc bags for mid-week dust-free goodness :)
- electrolyte tabs, which I guess are basically electrolyte pills and can be taken on the go easily bc no need to dissolve them, and also make nice gifts!
- miso paste 1 tbsp with 1.5 cups hot water every day helps you acclimate (I'm guessing this is bc of the salt?)
- wrecking bar and vice grips together will make removing rebar way easier
- Have 2 traction mats (if you have 2wd vehicle) in case it rains a lot they will help get you unstuck from the mud
- Bring collapsible over-the-shoulder cooler to carry ice back from center camp on a bike
- Nothing on this site needs refrigeration, perfect for condiment needs, although may make more trash to pack out? http://www.minimus.biz/Condiments.aspx

DISCLAIMER: I have NOT tried any of the above tips, I am a burgin! They're just the ones that sounded really helpful when I was browsing peoples' unofficial guides. Older/wiser/experienced burners please comment on the helpfulness of any of these tips if you'd like :) :)

You can get Ice at the public plazas at 9 o' clock and 3 o' clock too, just inward of C street, in addition to Center Camp. :)

This is a reminder to scope out the stores for cool Halloween stuff that is playa appropriate. There are lots of things that are not too Halloweeny and could be used for motif and costuming. November 1st, everything is half price!

kickass tips; I think we'll be eating miso soup every day (shelf-stable tofu, miso paste, dried seaweed). can't wait to meet you on the playa. :)
