FREAKING out about this weekend

So I have to get this out.
I am FREAKING out about this weekend. Like majorly. Hopefully some of you can give me some advice.

This weekend is the Miss Iowa USA pageant. My sister is competing in the Teen category ( she chickened out about this miss). I am doing her hair and makeup for this. Sat morning I have to be up at 6 to have her ready for interview by 8. Then I have a hour 15 later on to get her ready for the pageant (Gown and swimwear)
Sunday I have a hour 15 to it again for finals. This is very little time to do pageant hair and makeup.

Normally I would be ok BUT.. She has a VERY good chance to win this! She is smart as all get out, held a 4.0 all 4 years, Went to a ivy league when she was 15 for summer school, 3 mission trips,big brothers big sisters ect ect. She is a saint and very pretty to boot. We did questions tonight and she gave great answers.
So she has it to win it, but I have to do my part in making her look like a beauty queen. I know my skills but SOOOO much pressure!!

This is one of the hardest things I have had to do in my career other then interviews in NYC with Nick Arrojo (What not to wear hair stylist) Some one give me some insite to calm my ass down!:(

Just remain calm TG. Breath deep and exhale if stress and anxiety appear. Just remember you're there for your sister, and how much more beautiful she'll be because of you. You'll do an excellent job. Remember...you're a professional! And don't caffeine overload.

how to deal with the nerves. I have never been in a spot like this before. I guess it would be compairible to finalls for some one getting there doctorate ( i would assume thats what it feels like)

I used to do phone support for dial-up internet.
(yes I am old)
I had a customer who called in and couldn't figure out how to configure his dial-up connection to save his life.
I started to work with him and he would volunteer keystrokes and at one point started questioning everything I was telling him.
Finally I did the following:
"Sir, we can fix this, but I am going to have to have you suspend belief for a moment"
"Um... OK."
"Sir, it is going to require you to pretend something for that same minute."
"and this is going to help me fix my computer?!!??"
"Sir, I swear to God it will help fix your computer."
"Ok - fine! I will pllay the game! I am ready to pretend...!
OK - Tattoogoddess - this is the important thing- and this is where you are at:
"Sir, great. Let's pretend I do this for a living."

You are a professional.
You do this everyday.
This is what you do.
You earn a living at it.
Means you are good at it.

So if you have to, say it to yourself-

Drinking that will just make you wired and more jittery, not less. Try some herbal tea, something to keep you calm. Pouring sugar into your system may be the wrong approach, IMHO.

Iv never been to huge of a coffee or tea drinker. I do cold green tea in the summer though.

try steeping raspberry tea (caffeine free) and then pouring it over ice in your water bottle or travel cup. add a couple of slices of fresh lemon....so much taster than pop. if you need carbonation try adding some gerolsteiner or some sort of fizzy water.

a hanky with some lavender/mint essential oils soaked into a corner can be soothing too if you breathe it in once and a while.


and you have enough time to get yourself in good condition!

this includes making sure you hydrate yourself adequately starting tomorrow, resting enough, and getting good nutrients for energy(pasta friday night? that always gave me stamina when i was competing the next day). if you have those covered for tomorrow and friday, you will most likely tip the scale in your favor and be able to handle the stress and perform better. You already have the skills. just do your best!! your sister is lucky

lol I swear you have disapeared from FB this past week. I freaking out the past few days cause I could not get her hair to hold a curl longer then a hour ( that has no been fixed) I did 3 teats runs this week. One being last night.

Everybody there will look nice, so your ability to think and act will be the stand-out. Don't get into a caffeine cycle that'll keep you (or her!) up too late. It'll be hard to sleep that night anyway, so you gotta get in that consistent cycle these coming days. Teens have different sleep cycles than adults, so if she can sleep-in, let her. Have a good breakfast too.

I have done 3. Still uber freaked out. I think it may because I did hair comp a year ago . had a hour to do hair and makeup. i BOMBED the makeup part and placed 12th. It still looked great but im very competive.

BREATHE!!!

Believe it or not, this is going to go smooth. You willl figure out the hair issue (watered down gel + light heat used to work for my kid, who had the most fine, str8, bodyless hair you could imagine when young, would hold for a while and looked not all moussed/gelled up), try different things until you find what works. But the other thing - the only way it can go bad is if you OBSESS on what you do so well.

It's a lot like public speaking - people psyche themselves up so bad they get to the point they can't - even tho they've done it for months before - when they talk in front of some dignitary or something. Seen it happen, and you gotta remember (like MD said), YOU are the professional, it will all work out exactly the way it's supposed to, as long as you QUIT WORRYING and/or OBSESSING and just do what comes natural.

This is critical not just for you but your sister as well - if you're stressed and panicking, that will telegraph to her, and you don't want that.

It AIN'T a big deal. Serious. You got the talent, just let it flow. DON'T THINK ON IT - Just let the magic happen. Because... it will. Don't do anything wierd or unusual or different than you would for any client - just do it. You'll be fine.

Thank god for Hotel Internet! So today is pageant finals. We find out if she made top 18.
Yesterday morning was not so bad. Got her ready for interview. She sounded like she did really well.
Night makeup and hair... not so much. We lost power for 15 min. Thank god for the hot rollers. They stayed warm. Got everything done on time and on stage. She looked amazing! Have to do hair and makeup again at 2:30 mom is helping roll her hair so I wont have as much stress. I am sooooo hoping she makes at least top 15. There is one REALLY pretty girls but has done no charity or service work. She is to busy with volleyball. Listening to the MC card about the girl's accomplishments.... marg was the only one who has done a ton. Most others where like going to the grammys and spending time on there parents yaut (spelling?). It was kind of saddening. But anyways here she is in her eve gown. What do you think?

I am SOOOO proud of her if she wins or does not win. She looks amazing on stage, has a good head on her shoulders and did the best that she could. We will just have to see in 4 hours!

So really sad news to report. She did not even make it into the top 15. To be quite frank I was REALLY surprised. Out of the top 15 only 2 of them had done any form of charity work. The rest of them were varsity athletes,cheerleaders,models or actresses. I think one was in national honor society. In my heart I felt like it was a bit rigged. All 6 of the judges had come form of being in the entertainment industry, one was a ex nfl player, another was a celebrity coraspondant, another was a talent scout for a model/talent agency,one was in some major acting group and I can't remember what the others where. None of them where in the "norm"
Marg stayed all smiles through out the whole pageant tonight while on stage for the top 5 crowning. But when she came out to see us she broke down in tears. I felt so heart broken for her. Hell im tearing up right now while writing this. I just grabbed her and started crying and told her it did not matter who won. She should have won it and she was amazing. I just held her and we cried. I honest in my heart of hearts feel she should have won or at least placed. She has gone to Belize to help underprivileged kids in for a whole summer working to teach them,went to Alabama to a work as a summer Councillor at a special needs camp, mission trip to Montana, She is a big sister to a girl with a sever disability,6 years in a row honor society member,went to Brown college for a summer on full academic scholarship (that is a ivy league for those who do not know) rotary club,editor at the school paper all 4 years, volunteers with the homeless shelter and habitat, lock of love donator 2 times, dancer for 8 years, would drive little girls to dance because there moms where at work.
For real? How could she not place? You see her, she is beautiful. And to boot fucking smart and selfliss. Something about this just feels so wrong. How can she not place in the top 15? Im so frustrated and saddened and to see her face after KILLED me. She deserved to be up there.
