traffic/time on the 6th

Okay, I do vaguely recollect a prior discussion of this, but . . .

On September 6, assuming that I get up at a normal time (at home that's 7am; on the playa, who knows) that I break camp in a normal way, that I dedicate two hours to removing all traces of human activity, that I bid sweet farewell to all my new playa-buddies, what time will I get to Reno?

Another way of putting this: Is the traffic a seemingly interminable bumper-to-bumper mess all the way from Gerlach to the highway?

yes - plan on at least 2 hours from blacktop to Fernley. It's generally bumber-to-bumber with clue-tards gambling they can pass you before they (and you) get creamed by oncoming traffic. Best bet - plan on PLENTY of time (like 4-6 hours) to get to Reno, and please DO NOT play the passing game. It really does not buy you anything.

We were passed by an SUV from Colorado last year; they were jumping ten cars at a time, doing at least 65 on that little road. Scared the hell out of me, and they were not the only vehicle doing that crap. (I could recall the personalized plates if I tried) Somehow they got back into line and arrived in Fernley exactly three car lengths BEHIND us. Jumping the traffic line will not buy you a single minute. Nothing could be so damn important that you need to endanger yourself, your friends and strangers in other vehicles. If returning to that job on time is so critical, leave Sunday morning.

Relax, enjoy the trip. Honestly, your car or truck will be happy to plug along at 55 or less. You'll be in good company.

Make sure your driver is RESTED and SOBER.

On the other hand if you are holding up traffic by only going 25 mph and you have 4 miles worth of traffic behind you....if you can pull off and let some of them pass, please consider doing so!

The only time I like going 25 is in Empire, Gerlach, and enjoying that awesome view of Pyramid Lake.

i am very happy that i don't have to drive from gerlach to i-80 route. i don't even drive through gerlach, as coming from seattle it shoots you out right between gerlach and BM.

Of course, that is only courteous ... but we both know how soft and narrow those shoulders can be. There's only a handful of places that pulling over is feasible. Given the amount of traffic, does the slow vehicle pull over for two cars? Ten? A hundred? Will the hundredth car even let them back in line? What if they just get damn tired of pulling over for everyone else? What if they can see the wreck up ahead and the slow down and you cannot? If the slow vehicle is not pulling over, there may be a good reason. Assume they know what they're doing other than being your personal roadblock.

Just being perverse enough to argue a different angle, nothing personal.
