While I agree with a lot of the sentiment that I've seen come out of the Occupy Wherever movements...

I can't see any public officials abdicating their offices and running to the hills.

Futher... Occupy's style of direct democracy doesn't seem workable to me. Watching some of the general assemblies, where EVERYONE has a say just seems like a laborious colossal process. It seems REALLY inefficient, and one person can derail the entire works. (It also caters to entitled people... MY VOICE IS IMPORTANT. LISTEN TO ME. LISTEN NOW!)

The other issue is that outside of any Occupy camp, the rest of the country runs on a representative democracy. So... the people in the camps really have no say in the day to day life of any one that should be representing them. Now... if Occupy got their GAs together, and started NOISILY putting voter registration drives in place, and LOUDLY started putting together how they were going to vote as a block on ballot issues and candidates they'd VERY QUICKLY move from "Dirty Park Hippies" to "uh, sir, you should come to the window. The electorate is here, and they have questions."

But it won't happen. There aren't even some temporary goals in OWS: no Mubarak to oust, no freedoms to win, etc. No real goals here. Just "good times" camping in a park. It's why OWS does not see much support besides some crafted poll questions and the lauding of armchair advocates like the people you see in this thread. OWS will blow away and accomplish nothing because there is no goal to accomplish.

Maybe the whole goal of OWS comes from the "good times" of sitting around "protesting." A hippie fest. Hippies think that change happens by sitting around and talking about shit.

Short of running officials into the hills, you will have business as usual which I'm sure some of you would find reassuring to slip back into the mind numbingly dull republican vs democrat debate. It ain't going to get better inside of the system. The system has to be broken before any meaningful organization can do good for the masses. Of course, this runs afoul of the population problem I talked about earlier in this thread. OWS may in fact fail by not having a specific agenda, but as soon as a specific agenda is made, there is great danger that it goes the way of the tea party or worse. History has shown this repeatedly.

Burning Man is a perfect example of how consensus <drink> works. I believe it's retreat week, and they're deciding everything that's going to happen in fiscal 2012. Probably in the hot tubs right now, consensing upon what liqueurs to serve with the creme brulee on Thursday night before the burn.

Tell that to Oakland. When you can shut down the Nation's 5th largest port because you are protesting the death grip Wall St and corporations have on the governance in the US, that's enough "direction" for me.

Kudos to Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou! If the referendum succeeds in saying NO to harsh austerity measures, which it will, Greece will default and then you ain't seen nothing yet. The proverbial shit is about ready to hit the fan. Mr. Blankfein, Dimon, Pundit and all the rest of you bloodsucking bank vampires...you scum are on notice. The world is watching you.

Just got back from seeing the new movie "J. Edgar". Definitely some lessons to be learned; uncanny how timely the release will be.

I don't agree with everything in the OWS movement; you will not be able to talk your way into change at this point - Even Ghandi had to concede violence for change though he was against it and had to fast in order to get it to stop). In the long run you're going to have violence anyway - better for it to be short and quick to scare the business criminal pussies out, than to have a long drawn out battle that injures many. The really big chunks of shit at the top have always known that violence is the only way to get them out of control and they're laughing your ineptness in understanding the basic precepts of war (as in Tsun Tzu) and how to properly stage a protest. A peaceful protest is essentially a cold war and deluding yourself that because it is "peaceful" that you are not in a war just gets more people hurt (as was the case with the G20 protest in Toronto last year). That is an irresponsible way to protest. Your weakness in Oakland invited the bullies to do what they did to you. You need to keep your 2nd amendment rights to back up your 1st amendment rights and you need to study to know what you're up against or those organizing OWS are just leading people to an eventual slaughter (because I can assure you the cops are prepared for violence). In Japan, such an irresponsible leader is a dishonor and would perform seppuku.
