From Ireland - 1st timer!
From Ireland - 1st timer!
Hi there !
My name's Maria and seriously considering going next year to BM but could be on my own! I'm baffled and in awe of where to start ! I'd be travelling from Ireland and would like to do a couple of gigs in San Fran first (I sing my own and play a reasonably mean guitar (for a girl I'm told!) and also play bodrhan (Irish drum) Is there a specific noticeboard I could look at for folk like me? ...where I could perhaps hook up with other like-minded folk to travel up with, have a bed, get advice on where to start with preparations?
Thanks for taking the time to read

There is a burner group in Ireland: http://regionals.burningman.com/eu_ie.html I am sure there are folks there that can give you guidance for the "over-the-pond" burn you desire
Please make sure to read the survival guide a few times ( http://www.burningman.com/preparation/ )... That stuff will save your life!
Being a girl has nothing to do with your capabilities! Either do or not. I'm just saying, that in the context of Burning Man, your gender is less important than what you have to offer. Skills, abilities, it is up to you.
Maybe I'll see ya on the playa.

San Francisco has a fair number of Irish bars. I know nothing of how they book acts, or which ones have live music, but it's probably worth a couple hours googling and emailing.

Welcome to eplaya.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!
There's a camp that gets together to play Irish music. I think there's a thread here about them.

Hi, and welcome to ePlaya!
Know that the playa conditions could be hard on your instruments, so take a search through the q&a tips and tricks board to see if there are any threads with tips on instrument care. As for looking for places to play on the playa, there's a thread in the 2012 Art & Performance board near the top of the page… Artists Seeking Stages. Once you've made your decision and have tickets, that'd be the place to go and post, and then as the event approaches check the Stages Seeking Artists thread (there may be a camp building a stage that's hoping to find you). As for gigging in San Francisco, unless you have a manager in the states to help sort out all the details of booking you just need to do that yourself. Maybe look around online for nightlife guides and start reaching out to venues that book live music. I don't know if there are any bay area musicians' web forums or online communities (or Facebook groups), hopefully some quality time with a search engine can help you out there. Good luck!

Hi Maria! Welcome to eplaya!!
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.
Re: From Ireland - 1st timer!
Welcome welcome welcome - head out to Smoking Craic in Charleville Castle in Tullamore on the 19th November - you will find all things sparkly and burning......methinks I shall stop there and let you come and experience it!!!
Ur just jealous cos the Voices are talking to ME!
Re: From Ireland - 1st timer!
Thanks so much all for the replies - yup i know about the charleville decomp but think it may be a stretch to make it unfort
as in Galway on the Fri night at a family thing...maybe you might know someone travelling up from G on the Sat maybe?
..but will look up the links mentioned above...might be back though for more Q's.!! - i know this isn't the right forum on it but if I do find myself on my own, do most people bring camper vans/uv type autos to camp in? do many people drive in and tent it? maybe there's a special forum on the perils (or not!) of camping...

Re: From Ireland - 1st timer!
The city is about half RVs and campers, half tents. There's also an in-between choice: renting a box truck and living in the back. (Cheaper than an RV, more protection than a tent.)
I'm a tent camper and I rideshare, but if I were flying into Reno and driving from there alone, I'd opt for the box truck.
To find out the many strategies, go back out to the main index and look at "Shelter" and/or "Transportation" under Preparation.

Re: From Ireland - 1st timer!
Hey Avekyo, welcome to eplaya!
A lot of people do all those types of things for shelter!
But I wonder, what the requirements are for people from other countries to drive in the US. I knew some folks our first year that were English originally, but moved to Thailand and ran some sort of retreat/spa/vacation place. They rented a huge RV and they drove it in.
I'm not sure if you have to have some sort of special driver's license, but it would be worth looking into.
With all the Ticket Lotto news, I'd say the first place to start would be getting a ticket.
In the mean time, maybe think and check out some different transportation ideas.

My advice to a virgin has always been, first, get the ticket. Now, more than ever...illy dilly wrote: the first place to start would be getting a ticket.
