Those wings are really nice.
All this time I was thinking foam core board and wondering how they survived but on reading this I realized it was craft foam and not foam core.
If someone wanted a more colorful / daylight version they could embellish them even further with the precut foam shapes they sell too.
Edit: if I remember correctly cyano doesn't stick to wax paper so that may be useful for protecting the work surface.

I'm with ya on adding extra decoration! I've started to use a sharpie to draw lots of fun swirls and patterns (Just black for now)
Nice tip on the wax paper, I'll give that a shot and update the tutorial if it works. Thanks!

I've searched all my usual spots with no luck. A repair shop may be your best bet. You may have to seek out a shop that specializes in industrial stuff.DanusLight wrote:I know at some point there was discussion of sewing machines and sergers.

Edit: If you can figure out how to thread and use it, that serger commonly sells for about 800.00 or so in good condition with the table.

YAY! I found an 800-series generic book. And DAB I saw the serger on e-bay .. mine is complete with a table, the 'arm' things up in the air and a box of needles, feeder feet and knives. Great score. I seem to recall that some of the 800 series were single needle and some were double, so hopefully the generic book will do the trick.DanusLight wrote:YAY! The latest Playa Coat - Silver metallic tone on tone brocade. Actually much shinier / more reflective than the pic shows. Red tie dye flannel lining, 4 pockets, red fur trim. Looks decent but the metallic threads are a bit scratchy to the touch.

Edited for grammar.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
Thats the simplicity #2333 pirate coat / mad hatter coat pattern and this is a hybrid of the two versions - a mad hatter (short) coat with the pirate cuffs and contrasting lapels. The pattern is way undersized though so the large shown here is cut from the XL pattern. To make anything bigger than a large the pattern has to be scaled up. It's an awesome design but a really poorly done pattern so be prepared to modify it.MyDearFriend wrote:Oh awesome DAB!![]()

The pockets are on the inside - 2 ciggarette / battery pack sized ones on the chest area and 2 flask sized ones below the waist area. I may add outside side pockets in the red fur as well.

Thanks, DAB! I know about scaling patterns. Extra half a yard, you think? That silver brocade is awesome but since we're going pirate I will be shopping in the red department.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
I guess it depends how far you have to scale it - my long coat took more than an extra yard (almost 8 yards total) due to more waste than the layout pattern shows. Because of the increased pattern size, it wouldn't fit when folded selvage to selvage so I had to cut some of the parts on the full width.
It's been tough finding red brocades that don't look like kimono fabric, but you might want to consider a crushed velvet for the pirate coat. I've been considering one in burgundy crushed velvet. It's easier to sew as well.
This will be my last reply for a while as I am leaving for a 2 week hunting trip today.

McCall's costume M4550
McCall's costume M4626
Both are fully lined. No pockets, I don't like pockets, and if I give Larry pockets, he stuffs them far too full to be good for the fabric. The pirate coat is getting gold lace on the cuffs.
The pirate coat is a generous fit, and the great coat was simple for me to scale to my short roundness.

Nice. Sure wish I could sew. Alas I don't even have the desire to learn. So on second thought, I guess I really don't wish I could sew after all. But I sure can admire the work of those that do.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
I got my flyers sorted for this week... McCalls patterns 99 cents each at JoAnns this week, through Saturday the 12th, Butterick 99 cents until the 9th. Hancock Fabrics, Simplicity patterns are a buck until Sunday (five for $5). All stores do a limit of ten. These are the flyers from the paper, not the ones mailed to your home. JoAnns accepts both home and newspaper coupons at the same time if you have both. They match coupons with Michaels, and vice versa.
Re: Costume & Crafting Help
Ok that's it...I'm convinced. Joann's never has their patterns on sale in FL. This stinks pretty smelly.
I went though the newspaper flyer and there is no offer for either pattern company.
On a positive note, they are having a 50% + $20 off a custom framing order so I will finally take the awesome temple image print I got from mudpuppy to get framed and put up on the wall.
AntiM- Question: where did you find the brocade you use for coats?
