Depends on what you mean by "killed".. by another or by accident/natural causes.

Accident/natural causes.. usually 1-3 a year.

You're going to have to be more specific. I know people who are 59 (or older) who go, & love it. I know people half your age who find it punishing, because they don't have the right temperament, self-awareness, equipment, or luck.

Know yourself. Are you an experienced camper? Are you healthy? Are there certain comforts you don't want to (or can't) give up? Would you want a real mattress and air conditioning? Good things to think about.

(Half the people at the event like mattresses and AC, so it doesn't mark you as "delicate".)

You will be travelling to BRC by yourself, but once you are there you certainly will not be alone!

I'm in my mid 40's and the heat has kicked my ass a few times, every year I adapt and survive quite well. The harshness of the environment makes everything you experience so much more intense.

If you live near a regional rep, you might want to get in touch with some seasoned burners from your area. http://regionals.burningman.com/ Before my virgin burn I was an experienced deep-woods camper, very self reliant and believed that I did not need to do much to get prepared. My regional rep gave me valuable tips, amazing ideas and instilled the proper perspective on what I was going to encounter.

I carry a small backpack with water, snacks, goggles, dust mask, gloves, sunscreen, meds, basically everything I need to get by if I don't return to my camp for 12 hours.

You have a decent amount of time to get prepared.
