Bali Indonesia- Where to get clothes made?

Hi,

I have notice that alot of the playa wear i bought in SF is MADE IN BALI and I have been told that alot of people from California take a holiday to Bali to get there playa wear made. Has any one done this or know of someone who has and can point me in the right direction of the best people to see over there for both dress making and also leather work? I have booked a holiday there to do just this but there are so many choices and I am sure not all are good.

The economics of the situation may well be that even a not particularly good deal on the ground in Bali is still an incredibly good deal by our standards. (Although if you count the plane fare, maybe all deals stink.) So, ability to communicate, followed by customer service are likely to be the deciding factors.

Well we thought about going to Bali, but then decided that garage sales and teaching ourselves how to sew was so much more exotic.
Post some pictures of what you end up with! I bet its way fun stuff.

Way back when, Larry had tons of custom clothing and boots made in Thailand. Basically he poked around until he found places where he clicked with the people and their work. That may be a good way to get started, walk and chat the district until you find "your guy".

Most anyplace in teh Third World (except California) you can find tailors willing to work with you. Good luck and enjoy your journey.

A lot? I don't think so. I know a few people who travel to Bali (and other points in the region) for fashion purposes, but they work in fashion design as their day job. A couple make trips there to sort out contract manufacturing relationships, while some travel through the region to source fabrics or for inspiration. Given the time and expense it takes to get there, it seems like it would be an incredibly expensive and inefficient way just to do some personal shopping for the playa. If you've already booked a trip - have fun! I'm told it's a great place with lots to do and see (outside the shopping).

This vaguely reminds me of Henry Rollins' story of touring Thailand, walking down an ordinary city street, & entering a shop with a bandmate because "Haha, we're so hardcore, let's look at silk, ha!" . . . and being wooed by charming Thai tail into having several custom silk suits and shirts made.

I really do try and be helpful or friendly or at least neutral on a first post. Yeah, they can add in a sigline that proves it's commerce later, and this smelled like commerce, but everyone gets at least one pass to show off if they are a jerk or not.
Of course, I do try to keep the interests of this board in mind while I'm here. I'm not perfect with it, but I work at it.
(and yes, there is a little bit of mind-fuck by playing it "straight" for one post)

I'd say more that it was someone with too much time on their hands in the "made in bali" exporters association or something..
